Chapter 72 🔞
Goosebumps raced across her skin. The touch resting against her was terrifyingly gentle.
“Hm. I like this.”
Calix lowered his lips to the nape of her neck. His sharp canine pressed lightly into the tender skin.
A small gasp escaped between Evelyn’s lips.
“Hn…”
She hurriedly bit down on her lower lip. Partly because the baby was asleep in the cradle nearby. But more than that, she could feel her own body yielding to this monstrous man, and the realization filled her with unbearable shame.
“You don’t have to hold back, Eve. Our daughter won’t hear a thing.”
The man noticed, with unsettling ease, that she was suppressing every sound. He spoke as though it were the most ordinary thing in the world.
Evelyn struggled to keep her wits about her. Finding an opponent’s weakness. Reading the situation. Those were the fundamentals of an assassin.
But the Duke’s touch allowed her neither.
The thin fabric covering her body was ruthlessly torn away beneath Calix’s hands. Cool air brushed against her bare skin for only a moment before the heat of his tongue swept slowly across her collarbone.
“Don’t bite your lip.”
Now she understood.
Calix disliked any marks that weren’t his, even the ones Evelyn had made herself.
His cold thumb forced its way between her teeth, prying her abused lower lip free.
The rough stroke against the soft flesh inside her mouth finally forced her lips apart. He didn’t let the opening go to waste. His tongue invaded at once.
A muffled sound tore from her throat, like a beast being strangled. The kiss was overwhelming, allowing her no chance to breathe.
Their saliva mingled in slow, wet strokes. The shameless sweep of his tongue against the roof of her mouth left Evelyn’s thoughts hopelessly tangled. The lack of air stole away what little reason she had left.
The hands that had been grasping blindly at empty air finally found his broad shoulders. Whether she meant to push him away or cling to him — even she no longer knew.
“Hah… mm…”
Their lips finally parted with a wet sound. Gasping for the breath she’d been denied, Evelyn glared up at him through reddened eyes.
“Don’t… play your games. I told you I’m not in the mood.”
“Who’s playing games?”
Calix’s hand drifted lazily along the inside of her thigh. Her body shuddered.
Savoring the reaction exactly as he’d expected, he leaned close and murmured against her ear.
“Not in the mood? Be honest, Eve. You love this damned fog. And you like my cxck filling your cxnt even more.”
The vulgarity was deliberate. Instinctively, Evelyn tried to resist. But her body, long since conditioned by his touch, was already betraying her.
The familiar helplessness settled over her. Heat unfurled low in her belly.
The ruined scraps of fabric hanging from her slipped free and fell onto the floor beside the bed. Calix’s gaze traveled slowly over her exposed skin. Just that look alone was enough. She could already feel herself growing wet between her thighs.
Evelyn clenched her teeth.
Goddamn this body.
She refused to let herself be swept away by this man.
Evelia Locke had never surrendered control of her own life. Even with her hands and feet bound, even in the depths of despair, she had never stopped believing she would escape Zelakent.
Evelyn Brumfield was different. The reason life had begun to feel so hollow was because she’d lost that control. No matter what she did, she could never break free from the jailer who guarded Brumfield. That crushing helplessness had slowly worn away her will.
She wanted to reclaim it. Even if only in the smallest way. She wanted to burn with that fierce determination to survive once more.
Without a moment’s hesitation, Evelyn moved first.
“What are you doing, Eve?”
She shoved Calix hard enough to knock him backward. In the next instant, she swung herself over him, straddling his thighs as her knees pinned his hips in place.
He made no attempt to resist. Instead, he simply watched her, curiosity flickering in his eyes.
She seized the front of his shirt, undoing the buttons with impatient, almost violent hands. As his broad, well-defined chest came into view, Evelyn braced her palm against it and pressed herself close. If she couldn’t avoid sleeping with him, then, at the very least…
She wanted this moment to be hers.
“I’ll do it.”
The words came out like a growl.
“Tonight, I’m the one in control.”
