Chapter 12
With a sharp motion, the plate flipped over. The sticky fruit flesh splattered, squishing against the floor with a sloshy sound.
A cold silence filled the room.
In the past, the old Kang Yeol-jin would’ve grabbed me by the hair. You used to be violent, cruel, and outrageously aggressive.
But now, you just stared silently at the mashed fruit on the floor.
“……”
The sticky fruit pulp between my toes dripped down. I saw his thick Adam’s apple bob in his neck as he gulped. Then, in a low, sinister tone, he muttered,
“Can I lick it up?”
It was disgusting. Those filthy words made my toes instinctively curl inward.
“Don’t like it?”
He let out a quiet laugh and wiped the floor with a rag he had picked up.
The sight of his bulging muscles, so massive they strained his pants, completely killed my appetite. I stared at him in shock for a moment.
“I bought clothes for our little one. Can you imagine how cute they’ll be?”
He pulled out a tiny piece of fabric from a paper bag. The clothes were smaller than his palm, and Kang Yeol-jin pressed his nose deep into them.
“If they look like you, they’ll be adorable for sure.”
He spoke sweetly, as if he were in ecstasy, his voice dreamy and soaked in bliss.
“Do you know how hard we worked to have a baby?”
Though his gaze was on me, those eyes, burning with intensity, seemed to pierce through me. It was a face that looked hauntingly distant.
“It’ll feel like we have the whole world.”
Kang Yeol-jin’s eyes slowly, ever so slowly, drifted downward until they fixated on my belly. He gazed at the round, gently swelling bump as if worshiping it.
The admiration in his eyes…
It made me want to gouge out my own eyes rather than meet his gaze.
He had never truly experienced what a real family was. Maybe that’s why his attachment to his own bloodline, to his child, was so extreme.
It was both strange and unsettling. Something inside me surged, a sudden impulse rising sharply.
“You don’t have to get your memory back.”
He was always the type to take whatever belonged to me without hesitation. Suddenly, the urge to steal something from him washed over me.
He wanted this child inside me so badly.
Of course, it made sense. He had always been desperate to take what was mine. Maybe he even wanted to take this baby inside of me.
As that thought struck me, I felt the silent impulse swelling within me, rising fast.
“I…”
All of Kang Yeol-jin’s senses were focused on my slightly parted lips. His gaze was like that of a large feline predator zeroing in on its target.
“I need to go to the bathroom.”
His expression brightened instantly. Whenever I showed any signs of appetite, sleepiness, or the need to relieve myself, he acted like that.
Before long, his massive body lifted me effortlessly. I was overwhelmed by a deep sense of shame as I found myself cradled in his arms. When we finally reached the bathroom door, he asked,
“Can I come in too?”
His face bore an expression that seemed to expect something from me. Faced with that nonsensical look, I slammed the door shut.
Finally alone, I stood in front of the mirror.
I picked up the glass cup next to me and smashed it against the mirror, shattering it. I grabbed a piece of glass, pressing it tightly in my hand.
Suddenly, I heard loud banging from outside, and before long, the doorknob shattered. With a loud crash, Kang Yeol-jin burst in.
And the face revealed was…
“I was so scared I almost lost my mind.”
I was steeped in a ridiculous sense of fear. I curled up in one corner, staring only at my toenail.
What were you afraid of? My death? You’ve wished for my death at every opportunity.
Then, Kang Yeol-jin sat down on the bathroom tiles. He began matching the shards of glass one by one, as if searching for any piece I might have hidden.
His relentless attitude made me shut my eyes tightly. The phone I had hidden in my pocket pressed heavily against my thigh.
