Yes, I was wondering the same thing because he’s been nothing but a narcissist who only thinks what’s happened to him. This feels such a rushed conclusion just to justify his redemption from now on.

From what I had understood, they died during a carriage "accident" while the main Iverness family went on a trip, and the only survivors were Dehart and Claude. Dehart--who had an amnesia because of the accident was rescued by Claude's half-brother, Roger, and he thinks Claude betrayed and killed his family as that's what Roger told him. Claude thinks it is his fault since even though he had known that Roger has a great ambition of being the Duke, he didn't think it was an issue until the carriage "accident" happened and he understood that Roger and their other relatives (maybe?) have orchestrated the accident. Claude tried to talk with the young Dehart but Roger was one step ahead so Dehart thought Claude was a traitor therefore Claude decided to flee for the time being and prepare to exact revenge on Roger, but maybe things haven't worked out just as he planned and maybe he got into another accident where luckily Watts helped him to recuperate.
