After the incident where Daniel accidentally attacked a Guide, he had been extremely cautious around them.
Seeing such a careful Daniel openly express anger towards Razne in front of everyone was certainly unusual.
Razne was obviously flustered. She hadn’t expected Daniel, of all people, to take my side and rebuke her.
She snapped back at him in anger.
“This is a matter between Guides. What does it have to do with you, Lord Daniel?”
Daniel chuckled derisively.
“Miss Razne, you’re the one who’s hiding behind your insignificant Espers, saying things you shouldn’t be saying.”
“…Are you done talking?”
“Lord Daniel, that’s enough.”
With a stern face, Widrow, who had been standing by Razne’s side, stepped forward.
“Seems like you’ve forgotten your place while mingling with the Guides in Lord Claude’s absence. You’d better remember your position. Instead of siding with that half-baked Guide who can’t even provide guiding, you should focus on your own duties.”
Widrow was mocking the fact that Daniel had been ostracized by the other Espers.
Unlike Guides, Espers have a clear hierarchy within their organization, especially in wartime when orders must be followed without question.
Widrow’s sneering attitude towards an S-Class Esper like Daniel was nothing but bravado to impress Razne.
Widrow might have thought that Daniel couldn’t easily pose a threat to him. After all, Daniel had silently endured his ostracism by the Espers until now.
But there was something Widrow didn’t know.
Daniel is a beast.
He’s simply been hiding his claws out of kindness.
And there’s a moment when he can’t hold back and reveals those claws.
When he stands up for the weak.
“It seems there’s been a misunderstanding.”
Daniel stepped towards Widrow. Due to the height and build difference, Widrow instinctively shivered as he looked up at Daniel.
With a cold, emotionless face, Daniel exuded an intimidating aura.
“To you, Miss Razne might just be a means to receive guiding, but Rose is my friend. Whether she guides me or not, Rose’s worth is in her very existence.”
“…”
“And it’s hard to believe you’re naive enough to think this, but… Do you really believe that anything you do could affect me?”
“…”
“Do you dare think that the likes of you could have any impact on me?”
Widrow froze in place, looking up at Daniel.
Not long after, Widrow’s breathing became alarmingly rapid. It was as if he wanted to breathe but couldn’t.
Widrow’s whole body turned red as if he were about to burst, unable to move, convulsing. Foam started coming out of his mouth, and his eyes rolled back, the blood vessels bursting.
Daniel was using his ability on Widrow.
Daniel’s ability was water. As long as there’s moisture, whether in the air or in a person’s blood, he can expand or contract it at will.
Being such a destructive power, Daniel had never used his ability on a person before.
“Stop it…”
“…”
“I said stop!”
I walked over, panting, and grabbed Daniel’s arm. Only then did Daniel turn to me with a surprised expression.
With Daniel’s ability released, Widrow collapsed onto the floor.
Ignoring the convulsing Widrow behind me, I raised my voice at Daniel.
“Are you crazy? How could you use your ability on a person!”
“Ah, I-I’m so—”
“Why…! You’re not like this…!”
“Miss Rose…”
My eyes began to tear up. Something hot inside me bubbled up, ready to burst.
Again, again.
I always cause incidents. Because of me, there’s always turmoil around me.
Every attempt I’ve made to handle things on my own has only led to bigger problems. Then, it’s always those around me who have to clean up the mess.
Daniel attacked Widrow with his ability to defend me, which means he won’t be able to avoid punishment from the Center.
Razne was right. I only end up harming those who try to help me.
