The reason there was no doorbell was that Claude had ripped it off before. We didn’t have many visitors, and it kept ringing at inconvenient times, which irritated him.
But removing the doorbell didn’t stop people from coming. When there’s no doorbell, they’ll just knock, and knock they did, right at the worst possible moment.
Even though the doorbell was gone, we couldn’t exactly take off the door.
So Claude’s anger was directed straight at the unwelcome visitors.
“…Do you want to die?”
“W-We’re just here to do our job…”
I slapped Claude on the back and stood next to him. He looked down at me with an irritated expression.
I knew what he was thinking. If I had stayed put, he would’ve chased them off and finished what he started. Why did I have to come out of the room?
Because he shouldn’t just chase them off.
If they had come to this house and knocked on the door, they must have been prepared to face Claude. So, there must be a reason they had to come here despite the risks, and I needed to hear them out.
I rubbed the spot on his back where I had hit him and asked the visitors,
“What’s the matter?”
“We, um, have urgent matters to report. It’s something that requires Lord Claude’s immediate attention…”
The two men, unable to even glance in Claude’s direction, stammered their explanation. Their faces were familiar— I had seen them around the Esper Division a few times.
They fumbled and pulled out an envelope from their pockets, handing it to me.
“A Code Purple has been issued.”
“…What?”
I was too dumbfounded to even think about taking the documents and just stupidly asked again.
I couldn’t understand what they were saying. It was just that unrealistic.
But Claude reacted immediately.
“…Rose.”
When I looked up at his suddenly icy voice, I saw him glaring at me with a terrifying expression.
“It’s not me…”
I could understand why he was suspicious. Considering how much trouble he got into the last time he received a Code Black notice and left the house.
Code Purple isn’t as severe as Code Black, but it’s the next level down, indicating a significant and urgent situation. It’s basically the preliminary stage before a Code Black.
Such situations rarely happen, and given that I recently begged to be let out of the house, he might think I was planning to escape again.
But even if I wasn’t entirely sure about my feelings for him back then, now there’s no reason for me to pull such a stunt to get away from him.
“It’s really not me, okay? Do you think I’m stupid enough to use the same trick twice? Especially when I’d obviously get suspected like this?”
Despite my protest, Claude seemed to barely listen. It was extremely frustrating.
Of course, I also found it hard to believe. If the Code Purple notice wasn’t a fake that I had forged, then it meant that a truly dangerous situation had arisen.
“…Let me see that notice.”
“Oh, uh, sure, here…”
I tried to take the envelope from the staff, but I couldn’t. Naturally, Claude intercepted it.
He dramatically ripped the envelope to shreds right in front of my eyes. The notice turned into fluttering pieces of paper, and the three of us could only watch in dismay.
Claude gritted his teeth and almost spat out a warning at me.
“Don’t try anything stupid. It won’t work.”
“No…”
I’m really not lying…
It was so unfair that I couldn’t even speak.
Ignoring my protests, Claude…
“Get out.”
Finally, with a deafening slam, he shut the door. The pale faces of the staff were no longer visible.
And my innocence was only proven the next morning.
