In fact, things went back to normal.

My daily life quickly returned to its usual state, working as a support staff member in various departments.

“Alright, that’s that. This is the Guiding Medicine Storage Room. Any questions?”

Azir, a sunbae who recently moved from the Guide Support Department to the Guiding Medicine Department, asked with a friendly face.

Looking at the fluorescent green medicine that seemed like something you shouldn’t inject into a person, I shook my head.

The Guiding Medicine Department is where Espers come when they haven’t received enough contact guiding from Guides.

Compared to Espers, the number of Guides is ridiculously low, so most Espers don’t receive satisfying guiding.

Therefore, if regular guiding allocated by the Center is insufficient, they come here to receive additional meds.

Of course, the effect of medicine can’t be compared to guiding through direct contact with Guides. It’s more like a powerful painkiller, making sensations numb to temporarily alleviate pain.

Anyway, I was temporarily assigned to the Guiding Medicine Department this week in response to a request for cooperation to lend a hand. This was due to the unfair reason that I was once his direct junior.

In fact, this kind of makeshift work is common for new non-ability office workers at the center. So, I resigned myself and came along.

“Alright. Let’s go to the IV room this time.”

The IV room was right next to the medicine storage room.

The IV room was quiet, with several partitions, and inside, Espers lay on beds receiving IVs.

Azir carefully explained how to record the identity of Espers receiving IVs, the type of medicine being administered, and so on.

Compared to other tasks, it wasn’t particularly difficult.

As I went about my duties, I noticed a door that wasn’t very noticeable behind one of the partitions.

“What’s that door?”

“Oh, that’s… you can think of it as a VIP room.”

Azir tilted his head, then approached the door. He turned the doorknob, but the door was locked from the inside.

“Lucky you, Rose.”

“Huh?”

Azir chuckled and, from a keychain on his belt, found a key to unlock the door.

As we entered, there was another room.

It was a very large and empty room with no partitions. There were no furnishings, just a sofa in the middle.

And on the sofa…

“…Why is that person here?”

Claude was there.

He seemed to be asleep, using his arm as a pillow, with his long legs protruding well beyond the edge of the sofa.

Despite the discomfort apparent in his furrowed brow, his eyes remained tightly shut.

Perhaps it was because we unexpectedly met in such a place after a long time; I found myself staring absentmindedly.

“Doesn’t he look like a real disaster? If he just had a bit less of an attitude, the Guides would be lining up in front of him.”

Azir’s loud voice was enough to snap me out of my daze, and I quickly hushed him.

“Gosh, senior. What if he hears you while waking up?”

“Don’t worry. See what’s stuck in his wrist?”

Azir shrugged his shoulders while saying that.

Indeed, Claude usually never exposed bare skin. However, between the leather gloves and sleeves, a glimpse of bare skin was visible, with a thick needle embedded.

“…Is he getting a guiding IV?”

“Yeah. The feeling of receiving that IV is really disgusting. That’s why when Espers get IVs, they often take sedatives strong enough to put an elephant to sleep. Even if you slap him a few times, he won’t wake up.”

Azir chuckled, knowing that I had been dragged around by Claude for a while.

But guiding meds? Claude?

“Normally, isn’t that kind of d**g administered to lower-level Espers? Does it apply to S-classes like him?”

“What can you do? He hates getting guided by Guides even if he dies. But we can’t just leave a high-risk S-class Esper unattended, right? It has some pain-relieving effect. Well, it only dulls the pain to some extent, and he’s still a ticking time bomb ready to explode anytime.”

“…”

“Well, isn’t life unfair when you think about it? This person, an S-class Esper, earns a yearly salary that’s more significant than the Center’s annual budget could give, yet he can’t even get the most basic guiding from a Guide. Despite taking sedatives and enduring numerous IVs of this disgusting guiding medicine, he’s still alive. He must have been miserable since his manifestation. Too painful.”

Azir made a foolish joke, saying that even if I were to live in his place, I wouldn’t want to.

“…”

“Although he harassed you to find his Guide, of course, he’s wrong in doing so. Well, even if you don’t forgive him, at least understand. For Espers, finding a Guide is a matter of survival.”

“…”

“Survival. That’s what it’s all about.”
