Chapter 320
“Well, she’s not wrong.”
The original male Guide grinned and said to me.
“Instead of causing unnecessary trouble when you’ve barely been here, why don’t you try doing it yourself if you’re so eager to try something?”
“……”
“Just don’t expect us to back you up if things go wrong. You’re on your own for the consequences.”
Except for the two who were pushing this, the other Guides remained silent. But no one tried to stop them either. This meant they shared similar opinions.
They were annoyed by a newcomer like me trying to rally them, yet they held a faint hope that my small stature might be the only chance to break the current situation. However, they didn’t want to risk getting into trouble by supporting me if I failed.
In other words, they didn’t want to get involved unnecessarily, but they were willing to cheer me on if I took the initiative.
I was overwhelmed by the sudden expectation placed on me by the Guides.
“Everyone, that’s enough.”
Finally, Helga couldn’t stand it anymore and stepped in.
“Rose hasn’t been here long. What’s the point of bullying her with territorial nonsense?”
But even Helga couldn’t reverse the already turned tide of opinion. The arrows of criticism aimed at me immediately turned towards Helga.
“Exactly. This newcomer keeps stirring us up without even understanding what this place is like. Let her experience firsthand why we haven’t even dared to think of escaping.”
“…Fine.”
“What?”
All eyes turned to me in shock.
“I’ll give it a try. Whether I succeed or fail, I don’t know.”
I shrugged my shoulders as I spoke.
Helga’s face turned cold. She looked more worried than angry.
“Rose, don’t get swept up in such provocations…”
“I’m fine.”
I cut her off appropriately.
Every room has small ventilation ducts instead of windows. I’ve never tried to enter one, but if someone were to attempt it, the smallest person here would have the best chance.
I was disappointed that the Guides expected me to take the risk without intending to help me. But behaving the same way would only mean continuing this miserable life.
I had already prepared myself to die when I told Hermann that I had imprinted with Claude.
The biological experiments I endured were so painful that dying seemed preferable. Moreover, if the experiments succeeded, Claude might be put in danger again. Could things get any worse?
If I could escape, that would be ideal, but even if I failed and they killed me, it wouldn’t be the worst. I would welcome my death over his.
Of course, every decision I’ve made thinking nothing would happen has ended in regret…
Some Guides have been trapped here for sixteen years. It’s only natural to want to at least try to escape, no matter the outcome.
“I’ll give it a try, whatever the result may be.”
And so, what happened following my bold decision was…
“First, we need to get a key.”
One Guide suggested solemnly. But the suggestion was immediately refuted.
“How are we supposed to get a key? The Espers will be guarding it closely.”
“Not necessarily. Espers don’t need a key. The door locks automatically from the outside. Unless they plan to bring a Guide into the room for private time, they don’t need to carry a key.”
The Guides, who had no responsibilities, huddled together and held a heated discussion, leaving me out of it.
How could people who were always so lethargic suddenly work together so well? I felt a bit disillusioned.
