Chapter 325
The decision to escape from this prison-like place wasn’t mine alone. I had only obtained the key.
From the moment we tried to open the door and escape, the Guides, whether they liked it or not, would become my accomplices. If we failed, the oppression from the Espers would worsen, and everyone would bear the consequences.
Therefore, opening the door with that key and attempting an escape required the consensus of all the Guides.
Anyway, that aside…
“For now… could someone catch me?”
Everyone was so focused on the key that they paid no attention to me. After calling out several times, one of the taller male Guides reluctantly climbed onto the bed with an annoyed expression.
Even though I had done this a few times, I was still scared to jump down. Was it because I didn’t trust the person?
He looked barely stronger than me. What if he couldn’t catch me and ended up breaking something?
Hesitating too long might lead them to just tell me to jump down on my own, so I was about to leap when—
Clang! Suddenly, a noise came from the door. Already on edge, the Guides immediately turned their attention to it.
There was no doubt. Someone from the outside was trying to open the door and come in.
The Guides quickly dispersed, afraid of being caught conspiring. The Guide who was supposed to catch me was no exception. He jumped off the bed faster than anyone else.
“What am I supposed to do if you leave?!”
“Just stay hidden! With so many of us here, they won’t notice if one person is missing!”
He shouted back carelessly. Before I could protest further, the heavy sound of the lock turning filled the room.
So, I did the only thing I could do to avoid being caught. I hid back in the ventilation duct. I planned to come down after the Espers finished their business and left. Jumping down now would be like announcing that I had been crawling through the ventilation ducts.
But then…
“Where’s the pink-haired one? Get out here now!”
Two Espers burst in, shouting at the top of their lungs, looking for me.
The Guides were startled but pretended not to know. However, since I was the one they were looking for, my absence was quickly noticed.
“…She’s not here? The pink-haired Guide?”
“When did she disappear? Was she here when you all came into this room?”
The agitated Espers began to corner the Guides, demanding answers. Even though the frightened Guides shook their heads and said they didn’t know, it was no use.
“Tell us right now!”
One of the Espers raised a hand threateningly, and finally, a Guide broke down and pointed towards the ventilation duct where I had been.
“…The ventilation duct?”
I had no choice.
If I went down now, I would either be killed immediately or wish I were dead because of what they would do to me.
With just a little more questioning, they would easily find out that I had encouraged the Guides to escape and retrieved the key. Once the security tightened, escaping would become impossible.
I had already prepared myself for death. They hadn’t killed me yet, but they were using me for biological experiments to develop a powerful d**g to neutralize Claude, their biggest obstacle. So, if I couldn’t escape, there was no reason to go down now, dead or alive.
Having made up my mind, I quickly crawled further into the ventilation duct. I needed to get out of there as soon as possible.
But then…
Bang!
There was a deafening noise, followed by the sound of something collapsing and the Guides screaming.
