Chapter 337
On the way home, I received a text from the boss.
[Don’t come to work tomorrow.]
…I got fired.
I came to the conclusion. It was something I had already suspected might happen.
Still, it was convenient working near school. Now I couldn’t avoid the hassle of finding a new part-time job.
I sat in the subway, lost in thought, and ended up missing my transfer station. To make matters worse, I missed the last train because the subway service ended for the night.
In the end, I took a taxi. I could have gone to a nearby 24-hour café to kill time and save money, but if I did that, my mom wouldn’t have left me alone.
The taxi was expensive due to the nighttime surcharge. Even though I was still far from home, the meter had already passed 25,000 won. It was as if I lost more than two hours of hard-earned wages just because I got distracted for a moment.
Eventually, I whispered to the driver,
〈…Sir, I feel nauseous and might throw up. Could you open the window, please?〉
When I got home, there was someone else there besides my mom. It wasn’t surprising since my mom often brought men over, but it was a bit unsettling to come face-to-face with one without any prior warning.
As I was about to turn away, they both blocked my path.
〈I told you to come home on time.〉
〈…….〉
〈After raising you, all you do is talk back to your mother. Now you’re even defying me.〉
For the past few days, my mom hadn’t said much even when I came home late. I thought she was too scared to mess with me after I pushed her away.
Even after living together for 20 years, I didn’t really know my mom. What my mother, who had so little, couldn’t let go of until the very end wasn’t her only daughter.
She had to protect what little pride she had left, even if it meant breaking the only child she had.
〈…Make sure she never dares to defy her mother again. Teach her a lesson, darling.〉
At my mom’s words, the man took a step toward me. I don’t remember his face very well.
He was just big. His height, his build, and his hands. I thought that if he grabbed my head with those hands, it might just crush it. As he approached, his shadow loomed over me.
I tried to run, but I was caught. A large hand flew toward my face.

I escaped from the man. I thought I didn’t have any strength left.
But the fear that I might actually die this time must have triggered some superhuman strength.
I shook off the arm trying to grab me and ran straight out of the house.
I hadn’t even grabbed my wallet—I only had my phone in my pocket. As expected, I had nowhere to go, no one to call.
So I just walked aimlessly. I guess I should be thankful that at least I had my phone.
I walked endlessly, watching videos online on my phone. But even that had its limits. Compared to the time I needed to endure until morning, the videos were absurdly short.
So I started playing a game. It was set in a world called Guideverse, with a rather unfamiliar setting.
I had never heard of it before, but it seemed quite romantic. To me, the Guides seemed even more admirable than the Espers with their superhuman abilities.
Because a Guide is the only salvation for an Esper. In reality, the idea of someone saying they can’t live without you is just an illusion, and anyone can quickly find a replacement.
But when I actually played the game, it wasn’t as romantic as I had hoped. It was actually one tragedy after another. Every time the female lead seemed to get close to the male leads, some dark villain would go on rampage and ruin everything.
I mean, isn’t this supposed to be Guideverse? A romance between Espers and their only salvation, the Guides? Shouldn’t that kind of childish, fantasy-like love be possible, at least here, if not in reality?
I want that evil villain to become the most miserable person in the world.
Fuming, I turned off my phone and continued walking.
At some point, I realized I was crying.
