Chapter 343
Trauma Center Consultation Room, National Medical Center in the Capital—
“The recovery is not bad so far.”
The doctor spoke in the most professional tone he could manage, but in reality, cold sweat was trickling down his back, and he was tense to the point of feeling a chill.
The person sitting in front of him wasn’t just any VIP.
This was Claude Denhardt, a man for whom the title of VIP could be amplified a hundred times and still not suffice.
Lately, there was no place in Arteon where you didn’t hear about him.
He had always been famous, but nothing compared to his recent fame. Not just newspapers and TV, but even the little kids in the hospital were constantly praising him, saying he had once again saved the country during a major crisis.
Because of this, the hospital was practically shoveling out the flood of fan letters that poured in like a tidal wave every day.
From the moment the patient was admitted, the hospital had received a handwritten letter from the country’s president asking for special care in the treatment, and the hospital director had been calling the doctor to his office once a day.
The message was always the same: this is indeed a great burden to shoulder, but do be vigilant in taking on even more responsibility.
Of course, there were a few conspiracy theories floating around. Even while walking to the consultation room, the doctor had passed by TVs showing political figures furiously arguing.
“This is a political scheme. Hermann was the current administration’s Prime Minister. Why would he plan to overthrow the regime when he had nothing to gain? Are you sure the president has no connection to this? Isn’t this just a move to sway public opinion ahead of the election?”
“Get real! The president didn’t need to resort to this. He already had overwhelming support to secure a third term. If this were political, they would’ve covered up any such scandal within the party.”
“Who knows? The president’s popularity stems largely from the Center’s existence. Maybe they used Hermann as a scapegoat to purge those who opposed the current regime, using the hero’s influence over the people as leverage.”
The doctor, his neck stiff from tension, thought sarcastically, Maybe they should line up everyone who spouts nonsense like that and make them say it to this man’s face.
After all, no matter how much people praised him as a hero, the man himself was anything but happy in this moment.
“The amount of blood loss wasn’t small, but thankfully, it wasn’t life-threatening. However, as you’re aware, the wounds on both her ankles are quite severe…”
The doctor risked a glance at Claude’s hand. His fist was clenched so tightly that the veins bulged, and it trembled.
Even this man can have such an expression.
The doctor swallowed dryly.
This wasn’t the first time he had encountered Claude.
Although the Center had its own medical facilities, severe injuries would sometimes result in him being transferred here. Once, Claude had arrived with a gaping wound in his side, so deep that his intestines were visible.
Yet at that time, he had been disturbingly indifferent, asking the medical staff to simply show him how to treat the wound himself.
But now, despite his Guide having come through surgery successfully and being in recovery, Claude looked pale, as if he could faint at any moment, trembling uncontrollably.
The doctor knew well enough about the obsession Espers have with their imprinted Guides.
The tension during the surgery had been overwhelming. He had feared that if anything went wrong during the procedure, this man might go on rampage and tear the whole hospital apart.
