Chapter 348
Frightened, I began to beg pathetically.
“Um… did you get the donuts I sent, Doc? Claude went through a lot of trouble to get them for me. They’re really famous, you know. You can’t just buy them with money, and even after waiting two hours, sometimes you still can’t get them…”
“Oh, I don’t accept gifts from patients. It softens my resolve.”
“?”
“I’ll give them back when you leave. Alright, here we go. One, two…!”
“You son of a b—…!”
I almost let out every curse word I knew.
When the injury first happened, I had blacked out from the shock, so it wasn’t as painful then.
But now, forcing the damaged area to move again, even just the smallest motion in my ankles, was excruciatingly painful.
After just a few repetitions, I was drenched in sweat, completely drained.
As I lay there, limp and exhausted, the therapist cheerfully said,
“Great job! Let’s take a 3-minute break.”
“Doc, let’s be honest here. You don’t like me, do you?”
“Oh, what was that you said earlier, Rose? I was too focused on the treatment to hear. Did you say ‘son of a b—…’?”
“…I said I’m really grateful for the generous 3-minute break, oh noble doctor.”
As I grumbled internally, I glanced up at Claude, who had been holding me tightly the whole time…
“…Claude?”
He didn’t answer. His expression was strange.
His face had turned to stone. He looked unusually pale, as if he might faint at any moment.
I wondered what was wrong with him, but I didn’t have time to dwell on it. I was already overwhelmed with worry about my ankles, which would be bent mercilessly again in just three minutes.
I decided I’d have a serious conversation with him after the session. For now, I just collapsed in the chair, and time flew by in an instant.
“Okay, three minutes are up. Let’s go again, Miss Rose. Take a deep breath…”
“Th-there’s no way! Wait, it hasn’t even been a minute yet…!”
“You know, I’m writing my autobiography recently… Do you know what I decided to title it?”
“W-what?”
“‘I Chose to Become a Psychopath for the Sake of My Patients.’”
“?”
“Three, two, one…”
“Wait, wait, no, aaaagh…!”
The therapist paid no attention and twisted my ankles again.
“Great job! Let’s try to bend it a little more, take a deep breath…”
I must have screamed and cursed everything I knew.
The pain was unbearable.
It felt like my ankles were being forcibly twisted to 180 degrees. In reality, though, they were barely loosening the stiffness by a tiny fraction.
As I writhed in agony, I eventually broke down and sobbed. I hurled every insult and curse I knew. Grabbing onto anything I could, I found myself clinging to Claude’s arm, soaking his sleeve with my tears.
“You’re doing amazing. You’re a natural. You’re not just an S-Class Esper’s imprinted Guide for nothing. You’re incredibly brave. Alright, let’s use this momentum to bend it a bit more. Three, two…”
“AAAAAGH!”
Is this guy insane?!
Bracing myself for the next wave of pain, I shut my eyes tightly.
But nothing happened.
Is he some kind of sadist? Saying three, two… and leaving the final count hanging to surprise me later? Is he treating this like a rollercoaster, enjoying my suffering and fear? How could anyone be this cruel?
Grinding my teeth in frustration, I finally opened my eyes.
The therapist, who had been eagerly twisting my ankle just moments ago, was now dangling in midair, suspended by Claude.
