Chapter 161
After Ga-eun disappeared.
He had suddenly realized something.
When walking with him, his wife was always quiet, but occasionally took deep breaths to calm her rapid breathing.
Though she tried to hide it from him, his sharp senses and their proximity made it impossible not to notice.
Of course their strides would be different, given their height difference.
Come to think of it, he had never slowed his pace to match Ga-eun’s.
She had always followed him, slightly out of breath, trying not to show it.
Desperately, so as not to lose him.
He must have felt assured because Ga-eun was always following him like that.
Walking forward without looking back, until one day he turned his head…
Ga-eun was gone.
Unable to ask him to wait, afraid to be a hindrance, his wife had stopped in her tracks, too breathless to continue.
And then she turned around and walked away.
Even now, steadily.
“I’ll write a pledge if you want. You’ve already experienced that once, haven’t you?”
“…”
“I won’t harbor any foolish thoughts. I’ll never violate any conditions written in the pledge.”
Si-heon learned for the first time that when shock is too severe, one can neither move nor speak.
“I only want one thing.”
Perhaps misinterpreting his silence, tears crept into Ga-eun’s voice.
The intensity of the shock increased.
In any situation, no matter what he said to her, Ga-eun had never shown tears.
He’d never even seen her trying to hold back tears.
But now…
“Living with my aunt, and… this child. That’s all.”
The drops falling to the floor were unmistakably tears.
So clear and hot.
“There’s nothing else. Nothing at all.”
He wasn’t included in her wishes.
He had known this.
That must be why she had disappeared after declaring divorce without telling him.
So why did his chest ache as if he was learning this for the first time?
“I promise you, Mr. Kwon Si-heon will never be known as someone’s father. I can promise you that.”
Ga-eun pleaded with tear-filled eyes.
“I’ll never appear in your life again. Even if we cross paths, I’ll avoid you.”
With every word she spoke, Si-heon’s heart was mercilessly carved and slashed.
Something hot rose in his throat.
“I’ll make sure our paths never cross again, Mr. Kwon Si-heon.”
“……”
“So please, I’m begging you, please……”
Ga-eun pleaded with all her heart.
But no response came from Si-heon.
His face remained expressionless.
As if saying her tears and pleas had no effect on him whatsoever.
It seemed he had made up his mind.
Before coming here, Ga-eun had one final conversation with Chairman Kwon Soon-yeol.
His grandfather had proudly spoken of his eldest grandson, saying he never wavered once his mind was set.
It was a warning. Don’t entertain foolish thoughts.
And also… about the crematorium.
A place where everything that stands in the way gets burned to ashes.
This man wouldn’t even blink while disposing of her and the child.
Just like now.
“You already have everything, Mr. Kwon Si-heon.”
The thought emerged as a mixture of sighs, pleas, resignation, and laments all at once.
“You have everything. Honor, power, everything you’ve ever wanted…”
The Chairman of Hwanhee Group who deeply trusts his eldest grandson is his grandfather.
Even without contact, he has parents who genuinely cherish and love him.
Subordinates who swear loyalty to him.
Abundant wealth. Solid reputation.
The brilliant throne he would inherit from his grandfather.
Above all, he was someone who could have any family he desired, just the way he wanted it.
“I understand, I really do. I know how much of a threat it would be to you, Mr. Kwon Si-heon, to have a woman somewhere raising your child.”
Ga-eun spoke desperately, unaware of her own flowing tears.
“You can monitor me like you did when we lived together, to see if I’m doing anything suspicious. That should be enough, right?”
Ha. Si-heon let out an empty breath.
His wife, begging to be monitored so she wouldn’t make any demands using the child as leverage.
His wife’s desperate plea to maintain their familiar dynamics even after divorce, because they’re both used to it.
With every word she speaks, he realizes anew what a bastard he is, what a terrible husband he’s been.
He never wanted to be this kind of couple.
“Because you have everything, Mr. Kwon Si-heon, so…”
“What exactly do I have?”
Ga-eun flinched at his cold voice cutting through her words.
“Tell me, what do I have?”
Somehow his voice sounded heated.
As if tinged with red emotion.
Ga-eun cautiously raised her head, her tear-filled eyes widening.
She couldn’t believe it.
Si-heon’s face was contorted.
“I used to think that too.”
With anguish, anger, and…
