“That wasn’t me, it was the elder who did that. I came here to cast a spell on one of the sons of this house!”

“One of the sons? Boron?”

“Not the second one, the first. The one who usually stays at the temple. I had to strike when he happened to be visiting here. I only had one day!”

Chuck, unaware of Nancy’s growing stern expression, continued to boast.

He eagerly described how he had snuck in through a small hole, climbed the walls and ceilings, and found Aaron’s room. He even bragged about pricking Aaron’s hand with a needle while he slept to cast his spell.

“The spell I cast causes any weapon he wields to be destroyed beyond repair!”

Chuck only realized something was wrong when Nancy suddenly grabbed him.

“That man is going to be my husband. And you’re telling me you cast a spell on him?”

Thinking back, Nancy remembered when they first met, Aaron had visited the blacksmith to repair a broken sword. He had swung a sword made by the famous blacksmith, Rivel, known for its durability, and yet it broke after just a few swings. Even the weapons he took from defeated demons quickly fell apart in his hands.

Until now, she had assumed he was simply too rough with his weapons, but it turned out the culprit was an unexpected one.

“I-I didn’t know he was going to be your husband! I’m sorry! I didn’t know!”

“Do you have a grudge against Aaron?”

“I don’t! I was just following the Ferron’s orders!”

Chuck quickly changed his tone, saying he never wanted to come to such a heavily guarded mansion, but the Ferrons made him do it. He claimed he had never even seen Aaron’s face before this and pleaded his innocence.

Nancy held him tightly, inspecting him to see if he was lying. Chuck squirmed, gasping for air as he flailed his limbs.

“It’s true! The Ferrons are the ones with the grudge! He and his people hate you and Aaron! They’re the ones who set the fire, too!”

“The fire? You don’t mean… my shop?”

Nancy’s jaw dropped as she began to violently shake Chuck from side to side. Her anger, which had been around 60%, quickly shot up to 99%. Chuck, his head swinging back and forth, felt dizzy and disoriented.

“Y-Yeah! They said Aaron can’t be allowed to become the hero. That’s why they ordered me to destroy his grandfather’s sword!”

“What about my shop? Why my shop?!”

“I-I don’t know! They said something about you taking something from them.”

Chuck mentioned overhearing the Ferrons say that. Nancy racked her brain, trying to remember if she had ever taken anything from the Ferrons, but no matter how hard she thought, nothing came to mind.

“I’ve never done that!”

“It must’ve been a mistake, ugh! They look different when they face humans, just like us!”

“Different?”

Once Nancy stopped shaking him, Chuck slumped against her hand, exhausted. When she threatened to shake him again if he didn’t answer quickly, he winced and replied.

“We grow in size to look human, and they get rid of their fur.”

Without the fur, they looked human enough to blend into human society, which was how they were able to live among humans without being noticed.

Even so, Nancy was still confused. She hadn’t done anything to incur such hatred, let alone enough to warrant burning down her shop. She hadn’t scammed anyone or stolen anything, but was it something she had forgotten?

“Now that you know, let’s go capture the Ferrons’ gang. They’ve taken my family and other werebeasts hostage!”

Nancy’s eyes widened in shock at the mention of hostages.

“You should’ve told me that sooner!”

Nancy immediately jumped off the bed. Finally, she was on the move, and Chuck’s face lit up with relief.

“Are you going to rescue them right now?”

“How many of them are there? If there are too many, this could be tricky.”

Since Aaron couldn’t help her with this, she’d have to handle it alone. She worried whether she could win with just the two of them.

“There are only three.”

“Are any of them stronger than one of the Four Cardinal Guardians?”

“If they were that strong, wouldn’t they be the Demon King themselves?”

Chuck looked at her incredulously.

Only three, and they were much weaker than the Four Cardinal Guardians. Nancy felt confident she could win and prepared her sword.
