“You really don’t understand how serious the situation is, do you?”

Chrome spoke with a serious expression, but since he was in the form of a black rabbit, all Eir could see was an adorable bunny stomping its foot in frustration. She had to cover her mouth to stifle her giggles, trembling from the overwhelming cuteness.

“Sorry. I’ll focus.”

Afraid that Chrome might revert to his original form, Eir straightened her posture and composed herself. She quickly adjusted her sprawled-out position by the fire, kneeling instead to prolong the sight of the cute rabbit.

Thus, a strange scene unfolded: a person bowing before an angry black rabbit. But the two involved didn’t seem to care and continued their conversation.

Chrome nodded, satisfied that they were finally on the same page, and got to the point.

“Anyway, we’re in big trouble. That’s why I came to tell you.”

“Why?”

“People might come to rescue Rubel sooner than expected. Plus, the weather cleared today. That means the spell I used to isolate the island has been broken.”

“You were isolating the island for me?”

Eir looked at the rabbit with touched eyes, then used it as an excuse to hug it tightly. Her attitude was passionate, even if it meant her body dragged on the dirt. She was careful not to hurt the rabbit as she held it.

She rubbed her cheek against the rabbit’s smooth back, murmuring.

“You must’ve worked so hard! Even though you said you didn’t have much energy, you still isolated the island for me.”

Of course, if it had been Chrome in his human form, Eir might have found it suspicious. Why go through the trouble of isolating the island if he couldn’t even use teleportation magic now?

But all of that was overshadowed by the overwhelming cuteness of a talking, angry rabbit.

“Sigh. Get off me. We’re in the middle of something important.”

“Okay, okay, sorry.”

Even so, Eir didn’t let go of Chrome’s adorable front paws, pinching them between her thumb and forefinger.

Chrome gave up on that and continued.

“Anyway, we need to escape on our own. If you get caught now, you’ll be executed for sure.”

“But escape now? We don’t even know if they’ve arrived yet.”

“Isn’t it better to plan for the future? I’ll change my form and help you approach Rubel without being noticed.”

“You mean abandon Rubel right now?”

Eir repeated the words, her expression hesitant.

It had been a rare, enjoyable day.

Rubel had gone to cut bamboo to boil water for her after she sneezed, and the grilled fish was almost ready, smelling delicious. And now, she had to leave him behind?

Eir’s face darkened.

Chrome frowned, noticing her hesitation.

“Do you like Rubel now?”

Startled, Eir dropped Chrome, who had been perched on her hand. Chrome landed nimbly on the ground, standing on two legs and looking at Eir with a serious expression. His ears twitched.

“Well, I thought it might come to that. I don’t really care, but I’m saying this for your sake—be careful. You don’t really know what kind of person he is, do you?”

She didn’t.

Eir had no idea what would happen if she were caught by the people coming to rescue Rubel. She couldn’t even guess how he would react.

Once, she had been confident she knew a lot about him, but the more time she spent with him, the less she felt she understood him.

“Yeah, I know. But if I run away now, Rubel will be suspicious of me even if I show up later. He values trust. If I’m going to run, it should be at the last possible moment, right?”

Eir tried to buy some time with her words.
