Chapter 156
That damned proof.
Freidis had been saying this all her life to the child who had brought her shame by being born as her son.
‘Prove that you’re a true witch.’
Perhaps this was why Chrome’s specialty became changing his appearance. Since he could never prove himself as who he truly was, he kept changing into various forms.
This time too, Freidis would clearly be greatly disappointed if Chrome went to rescue Uldir. But now it didn’t matter anymore. How unwitch-like he was, such things really didn’t…….
“When! Where! Damn it, that kid is usually just cooped up in their room, why suddenly……!”
Chrome twisted his body in agitation. The woman, with a serious expression, began undoing the spells on the shadow that bound Chrome tightly. Chrome, unaware of this, suddenly fell into the lake with a splash when the shadow disappeared.
A loud sound of water splashing was heard, and shortly after, Chrome swam to the shore. The witch, who apparently didn’t spend much time outdoors, briefly blushed at the sight of Chrome’s wet body with thin clothes clinging to it, but soon dutifully handed him a towel.
As the rope that had been preventing shadows from invading his body broke, darkness naturally spread from Chrome’s fingertips, turning them black before returning to normal.
Chrome carelessly wiped off the moisture and urged the woman to explain the situation properly.
“So what happened?”
“The temple side somehow got hold of your shadow and pretended to capture you to lure Uldir. They must have had a vague idea of where Uldir was staying. They cleverly kept it from spreading to others outside while only capturing Uldir. I think it might be the work of a priest who knows about the special relationship between you and Uldir.”
From the woman’s explanation, the culprit was quickly narrowed down to one person. Chrome gritted his teeth and muttered.
“Not a priest. It’s the work of a holy knight.”
The woman immediately guessed who it was.
“Are you talking about Rubel Shinote?”
Since he was the witches’ greatest enemy, it was rare for a different name to come up in such situations.
“Why did he set such a persistent trap? What grudge does he have against Uldir? Is it because of that incident back then?”
‘That incident’
It was the closest attempt to killing Rubel Shinote. No one failed to acknowledge the contributions of Uldir and Chrome at that time, which means the other side could certainly hold a grudge.
After Rubel Shinote’s right-hand man died, the story of how they had searched thoroughly for Chrome and Uldir was known to all witches.
“But who hasn’t attacked that person back then? Why is he grinding his teeth only at you and Uldir?”
The reason back then would largely be because of his lieutenant.
Anyone who wasn’t a fool would know he died because of Chrome and Uldir.
But somehow, Chrome had a feeling that it wasn’t because of that now. Now…….
“This is because he’s obsessed with a woman.”
Chrome gritted his teeth.
Amid widespread rumors that Rubel Shinote was undergoing a Purity Rite because of a woman, because of Eir, he had captured Uldir.
No matter how he thought about it, Chrome believed that Rubel had discovered that he, who had encountered him as a black rabbit back then, was the same witch present when his lieutenant died, and was deliberately doing this to get rid of him for lingering around Eir.
“He doesn’t even care that his woman is in danger.”
Just hiding her at home isn’t enough. Is she the type to stay quietly confined when hidden? After even sleeping with her, how can he know Eir so little? Such thoughts continued to cross his mind.
Chrome squeezed his eyes shut.
Unable to decide whether to rescue Uldir, who had been taken to the Central Temple, or to go rescue Eir, Chrome finally decided to save Uldir first, who was definitely in danger.
“Don’t worry. I’ll get Uldir out.”
The woman wondered how Chrome would rescue Uldir from the Central Temple, known as the living grave of witches, but since Chrome was her only hope, she quietly nodded.
