‘Unlike light, which chooses humans according to its taste, darkness gives everyone a chance.’

At the time, she thought Freidis was just trying to insult the god. But now, thinking carefully about those words, perhaps it meant that unlike priestesses who could only use divine power if chosen by god, anyone could control darkness like the witches if they understood some principle?

Of course, that wouldn’t be easy either, but it would be better than doing nothing.

Eir bit her lip and stared intently at the shadow that loomed darkly in this place. Considering the darkness that had once filled her body and that she had expelled, she too could be said to have a familiar relationship with darkness.

“Can I move it just by thinking about it desperately?”

While other witches controlled darkness by writing magic circles beforehand or chanting spells, the darkness around Freidis was different. It seemed to exist like a loyal servant to comfort her, or move according to her will without any spells.

Seeing that, even someone like Eir might be able to control darkness to do small tasks without knowing magic circles or spells?

‘Even just a palm-sized darkness…….’

Eir persistently glared at the darkness and inwardly prayed earnestly. She tried to slowly control the darkness while recalling the feeling of touching the soft, squelchy darkness.

“Huh?”

For a moment, the darkness seemed to twitch, and Eir, who had been leaning forward to her waist to stare at it, unconsciously stopped. Perhaps it was just the light flickering and the shadow wavering, but Eir didn’t give up.

How long had she been like that?

The darkness that had been curled up finally yielded. A dense darkness about two finger joints in size broke off from the surrounding darkness and slithered like a snake toward Eir.

Eir, trying hard not to shout in joy, gladly accepted the darkness that she had always been wary of.

“Thank you.”

She scratched the raised portion of darkness as if it were the head of a cute animal, then asked it to open the prison door.

The darkness, as if understanding her words, paused for a moment, seemed to listen to her heart, then slid up the bars to where the lock was.

It then stretched its thread-like body into the lock, causing the lock to rattle as if it were struggling inside. The lock banged against the iron bars meaninglessly. But soon after, there was a clear sound like a latch being released.

Eir quickly reached out to grab the lock in mid-air before it could fall to the ground.

“Blackie! You did it!”

Eir, who had already named the darkness she had started to control, happily stroked the darkness as it crawled out of the lock and up her arm.

“You seem to take after my childhood habits.”

Until the age of 7, before her divine energy manifested, Eir had lived as a beggar on the streets and had naturally done some pickpocketing and many other improper things. Among them, what Eir was best at was picking locks on locked doors.

Eir muttered that Blackie was so good at picking locks because it resembled her, and then carefully opened the heavy prison door and came out.

Since she had no way of knowing the route, she just started walking aimlessly, but now that she could control darkness, she felt more confident and not so bleak.

‘Just go slowly. I can do it if I try. Someone might even come to rescue me.’

Eir clenched her fist and diligently walked and ran to check if there was a way out. While circling around this unknown building:

Suddenly, she discovered a door with a thin ray of light seeping through.

At first, she quickly hid her body behind a corner, thinking there might be someone there, but remembering that the witches lived without any light wherever they went, Eir soon realized that this light was unusual and out of place, and crawled back out from behind the corner.

Upon careful observation, there was no sign of anyone in the room, and the ray of light that had been seeping out had disappeared without a trace, as if she had seen something wrong.

‘The door is closed.’

Had she seen something wrong? Or had God shown her the way?

After pondering, Eir grabbed the doorknob and slowly opened it. But it was tightly locked, so once again, Blackie, who had been resting on Eir’s shoulder, exerted its energy.

Click.

After the sound of the lock opening, Eir opened the door.

In the pitch-black darkness, Eir was squinting as she couldn’t see anything, but soon she recognized a flag with the emblem of the Divine Empire and her mouth fell open.

It was a place where the witches kept various items they had stolen from the Divine Empire. And among them was something that looked quite serious.
