Chapter 178
Though he understood this was a warning shot, Rubel gritted his teeth.
His hand holding the sword trembled visibly. The rising knot in his chest was suffocating, making it unbearable. To have the person who deserved death right before him, yet be forced to lower his blade.
Since they wouldn’t actually kill him anyway, would it be better to just pierce this bastard’s throat even if it meant getting shot through the arm?
After a moment’s deliberation, Rubel raised his sword. His hand twisted slightly, and the blade was about to stab Magnus in the neck.
Magnus actually felt the cold edge of the blade cutting into his skin with a scratching sound.
So this is how I die, by my brother’s hand.
Magnus tightly shut his eyes and resolved to haunt Rubel even from beyond death, but despite the blood suddenly gushing out and soaking his collar, his consciousness didn’t snap.
What’s this? Is his skill so great that I don’t even feel my head being cut off?
Magnus opened his eyes slightly, hoping his head hadn’t been cleanly severed and rolled to the ground. That’s when he noticed a man with bronze skin wearing holy knight attire aiming an arrow at Rubel’s back.
The arrowhead was close enough to pierce Rubel’s back.
“Save…… cough.”
Magnus opened his mouth to beg for his life as soon as someone appeared, but blood surged up, forcing him to close it. Another man who had been firmly holding Rubel’s sword arm from behind tossed a clean cloth to Magnus.
“A moment later and you would have died. Refrain from speaking and stop the bleeding. The priest will arrive soon.”
“Let go.”
While the two men were aiming at Rubel’s back, he irritably shook off their hands and grabbed his sword again.
Baldur, the knight holding Rubel’s arm, knew it wouldn’t be difficult for Rubel to overpower them and then kill Magnus. He loosened his grip on Rubel’s arm and instead tried a persuasive tone.
“If you kill Magnus now, rumors might spread that you did it to cover up what your family has done. Please restrain yourself. We’ve found out where she went anyway.”
“Magnus deserves to die.”
But Rubel just repeated the same phrase like a parrot. Elric, the other knight aiming at Rubel’s back, also lowered his bow and added in a low voice.
“Drenching your burning anger in blood won’t help.”
“Who’s asking for help? I just…….”
Rubel snapped back irritably before falling silent as if he’d lost his words.
Even now, the cloth stemming the blood from Magnus’s neck was rapidly turning bright red. Looking at the blood, Rubel thought absently.
‘Could Eir still be alive?’
Isn’t it too late? That foolish woman.
She seemed like she might die even in a gathering of ordinary people, let alone being dragged off by witches. Could she really still be alive there?
And if she were dead, what would he do?
At that thought, suddenly his mind emptied, like a wave washing over a sand castle. Rubel felt something fall from his face and raised his hand to cover it.
Surprisingly, tears were flowing down his cheeks. One drop, two drops, tears streaming down his stunned face showed no sign of stopping.
“What is this?”
Rubel wiped away the flowing tears as if seeing something unfamiliar. Looking at the tears now soaking both his hands thoroughly, he could only let out a confused breath. Was this tight, tearing feeling in his chest also due to these tears?
He was actually sobbing?
Instead of butchering Magnus and rushing to find Eir as quickly as possible, he was standing here stupidly, shedding tears?
And those tears had as profound an impact on others as they did on Rubel himself. When people saw none other than ‘that Rubel’ shedding tears, they felt as if they’d witnessed something improper and quickly turned away.
Only Magnus, standing at death’s door and desperately trying to stop his gushing blood, failed to notice Rubel’s tears.
Rubel continued shedding tears as if time had stopped for a while. Below, as the group of holy knights struggled to defeat the monsters, the divine messengers awkwardly watched their friend cry for the first time, not knowing what to do and simply glancing at each other uncomfortably.
“Fortunate that we followed you according to the Proxy’s words. You insisted on going alone.”
“You really might have killed your brother.”
