Chapter 183

Rubel finished all the questioning in just a day and a half before coming out.
The officials investigating him were rather surprised to see him give quick answers about Magnus without considering his own position or his family’s, plainly stating that Magnus Shinote had made a deal with a witch.
‘Are you really sure this is alright?’
‘What wouldn’t be alright? I can’t lie before God. Besides, this is the fastest way.’
Rubel answered honestly, but the most important part of his statement was actually “the fastest way.” However, the official questioning him focused more on the first part about “not lying before God” and praised him saying, “As expected, a messenger of God is different.”
If they had known that this same messenger of God had smashed the Central Temple prison just days ago and tried to escape before changing his mind and turning back, they definitely wouldn’t have said such things.
He was anxious even after finishing the interrogation that would normally take at least five days in just a day and a half.
‘When, when exactly.’
When could he escape this damned impatience—if it were a matter of killing someone rather than stupidly waiting, Rubel would truly have ended whoever it was to bring Eir back.
If he had only been certain that the witches would imprison Eir in the same place as himself, he would have given up his own life long ago.
But rumors had spread that Rubel would even hold a Purity Rite for Eir, and after hearing this, the witch wouldn’t possibly keep her hostage alongside him, which is why he hadn’t rushed into the witch’s den yet.
‘Like an idiot.’
Damn it.
Muttering curses, Rubel blamed his past self. He had thought spreading rumors would keep Eir safer. He regretted leaving without making any preparations, wanting to trust Eir.
What foolish luxury. As he sat with his head deeply bowed, tormenting himself with countless painful imaginings, he finally raised his head with effort and let out a faint sigh.
“Brother! I mean, Lord Rubel!”
Just then, he saw Abel running toward him from far away. Rubel clicked his tongue in irritation and quickly turned away, pretending not to see him and starting to walk off. Abel, bewildered that Rubel was clearly fleeing after making eye contact, considered not sharing the news he’d learned, but thinking of brotherly affection, he shouted:
“They found Eir……! I mean, Lady Eir!”
At that, Rubel’s footsteps came to an abrupt halt.
“What?”
Closing the distance that had grown between them in an instant, Rubel grabbed Abel’s shoulders and asked again. Abel instinctively held his breath at the fierce look in his eyes, before realizing he had no reason to be afraid and spoke calmly:
“They found her in the forest near Yorunpel. She emerged suddenly from the bushes with the God’s Mirror…….”
“Which forest near Yorunpel.”
“The one toward the Binterfel estate…….”
Rubel turned away without hesitation, as if that was all he needed to hear. Abel, left alone, muttered, “But I haven’t even told you the important part.”
“She brought the God’s Mirror with her, brother.”
But Rubel was already too far away.
Having heard all he needed, Rubel was about to head out with only his sword in hand. His mind, consumed with the thought of meeting Eir as soon as possible, quickly mapped out the route connecting the Binterfel estate to the Central Temple.
Binterfel wasn’t far from here. It seemed Eir had been discovered on her way to the Central Temple.
Did that mean she had escaped from the witch’s group on her own? How could she have done that? Did someone help her?
Was the black rabbit witch distracted by the other witch they had captured in the Central Temple? Is it possible she thought helping Eir was more important than helping her fellow witch?
Rubel’s steps suddenly halted.
He felt his heart burning with a sudden pang of jealousy, but realizing this wasn’t the time for such feelings, he returned to thinking about the road to Binterfel.
It would take about six days riding on horseback.
They must be on their way here as well.
For the first time, something like hope appeared on Rubel’s face. His entire body was colored with unbearable longing, enough to make even his hands tremble.
But as he was about to pass through the large central gate, a guard who had been standing like a shadow suddenly moved to block his way with a spear.
“You cannot leave.”
