Chapter 187
“They’re not coming.”
At first, Eir waited patiently.
The Proxy had told her to wait and left the audience chamber, and she couldn’t disobey those words right away.
But as the wait grew longer, anxiety began to rise. Especially because of what they had discussed at the end.
“The firstborn of the Shinote family attempted suicide?”
She didn’t know why Magnus was here or what he had gone through, but she thought she should at least tell Rubel about his brother’s situation.
Besides, she needed to hurry and tell him about her true identity.
Because after meeting with the Proxy, she might be taken straight to prison without any chance to see Rubel separately.
Eir promised herself she would meet Rubel and then return, and carefully stepped out of the audience chamber.
Fortunately, there was no one guarding the outside of the audience chamber, so she was able to slip out without any interference. Whether it was fortunate or unfortunate to immediately encounter an unexpected person, she couldn’t tell.
“You……?”
The person wearing a hood and pressing his back against the wall while warily watching passersby was none other than Abel. His movements were so suspicious that Eir was dumbfounded and forgot what to say.
In contrast, as soon as Abel saw Eir open the door and come out, he expressed deep relief that he no longer had to continue this wretched task and grabbed Eir’s hand.
“You finally came out! Why did it take so long? Aren’t you curious about what your brother is doing?”
At Abel’s sudden appearance, Eir unconsciously backed away.
“I am curious…… but what are you doing here?”
“Obviously, I’m waiting to take you away. I’ve been waiting outside the audience chamber for so long. You know those without permission can’t enter.”
“You’re following that rule while doing this?”
He was respecting the custom that those without permission couldn’t enter the audience chamber, yet trying to sneak Eir away to meet Rubel.
Is this acceptable for a priest? The thought was so absurd that she unintentionally said those words, and Abel looked at her with a cold face.
“You don’t know anything. My brother has gone mad.”
His voice contained a thoroughly disgusted emotion as he spoke without the slightest hesitation. Eir was curious about what had happened to make Abel act like this, so she opened her mouth.
“I heard Magnus is here? What happened?”
“What do you mean?”
“Who captured Magnus?”
“Who do you think?”
Abel stared at Eir as if asking if her brain wasn’t working properly. Of course, Eir understood intellectually that within this Divine Empire, only the second son could touch the eldest son of the Shinote family, but she still couldn’t accept it emotionally.
“Shouldn’t Rubel be in the underground prison? How did he get out?”
“Ha.”
Abel turned his head away with a look of utter disgust, as if he didn’t even want to think about it. His face showed the weariness of someone who had been through a lot.
“Don’t even ask.”
Then, as if to say they should move quickly rather than waste time talking, he hurried his steps. Eir felt breathless trying to keep up with him and grabbed him tightly.
He was turning corners and moving so rapidly that she felt like she might fall over at any moment.
But at some point, Abel instinctively realized that if Rubel heard about them being together like this, it would be disastrous, and he quickly shook off Eir’s hand.
“Don’t hold me.”
“What? You grabbed me first.”
“Anyway, don’t hold me from now on.”
Seeing how he was rolling his eyes as he spoke, Eir thought the mad one seemed to be Abel standing in front of her, not Rubel.
Should I really follow him?
That thought made her hesitate and step back, but when she came to her senses, they had apparently arrived, as Abel was standing in a secluded place knocking on a door.
It was so dark around that she wondered if such a place even existed in the Central Temple. Abel was knocking on a heavy stone door that seemed to normally be opened and closed with divine power.
Eir grabbed Abel’s shoulder and said “Wait,” as she wasn’t mentally prepared to meet Rubel. But at that moment, the door opened, and a hand reached out and snatched her body inside.
