Chapter 89
“You’re not mad? I thought I’d get hit for pretending to know you.”
“Huh? Why?”
Eir looked at him with confusion as she pulled away. Chrome pointed at her wrist with a puzzled expression.
“Your wrist. It’s like that because of me, right?”
A brief silence followed. Eir’s face looked blank, as if she didn’t understand what he was saying.
Could it be that he didn’t recognize the bracelet that prevented her from using magic?
Feeling a bit insulted by the thought that she might consider him that clueless, Chrome pouted. But Eir just smiled awkwardly.
“I don’t think that way. You didn’t tell me on purpose, right? It would’ve just scared me if I knew beforehand. It’s not like I wouldn’t have done it just because my wrist got hurt.”
She even hid her injured wrist behind her back, as if to spare him any guilt.
Chrome was a bit taken aback but smiled out of habit.
Of course, he hadn’t told her on purpose, but it wasn’t out of kindness like she assumed—it was more to avoid complicating things. Still, he was grateful for her generous interpretation.
For a moment, he wondered if she was a pushover. Are all priests like this? But he decided to set that thought aside.
“Are you okay? Did Rubel Shinote try to kill you when he saw you using magic?”
Chrome steered the conversation back to the main point.
Last night, when he had disguised himself as a coachman to check on them, their relationship didn’t seem that bad.
Moreover, from what he heard, while Eir was unconscious, Rubel had been telling everyone they were married and had been devotedly taking care of her.
Chrome looked at Eir with a concerned expression, pretending not to know anything. Eir rolled her eyes, looking troubled, and Chrome immediately guessed, “Something must have happened.”
“He…… didn’t try to kill me.”
Eir barely managed to reply.
Chrome didn’t push further by asking, “Then what?” There was no need to interfere when things seemed to be resolving on their own.
“That’s a relief. I was worried.”
“Is that why you followed me?”
“Well, yeah.”
“But why did you tell me to come here? I’m trapped here, unable to leave. It’s an island—I can’t even run away!”
For the first time, a hint of resentment tinged her voice. It seemed she really wanted to escape. Chrome gently comforted her, placing a hand on her shoulder.
“Of course, it had to be an island. How else would you run away alone? Your opponent is Rubel Shinote, after all.”
“That’s…… true.”
Eir’s resentment quickly subsided at Chrome’s logical response.
“Besides, think about it. If it’s hard to get out, it’s also hard for anyone to get in. That means Rubel Shinote’s reinforcements won’t be able to come and capture you.”
Now that he mentioned it, it did sound quite reasonable.
Chrome seemed like a pretty smart guy. He was quick-witted and adaptable. Was that why he had such a carefree aura? Maybe the feeling that he was a bit sly was just her own misconception.
But then, Eir’s thoughts suddenly stopped.
Why would Rubel Shinote’s reinforcements come to capture her?
“By the way, did he find out I was using magic back then?”
She clearly remembered asking Chrome to teach her how to hide, and Rubel had stabbed her without knowing who she was.
It seemed like only Rubel had caught her using magic, so why would his reinforcements come to capture her? Rubel’s subordinates had only seen her as his mistress or something similar—no one had thought she was a witch.
Even Verina, who had been ordered to check if Eir had a witch’s mark on her body.
When Eir asked in confusion, Chrome clicked his tongue regretfully.
“Well, you and Rubel disappeared together. A priest named Petro suspected you. He said Rubel had called you a witch. And since there had to be a spy inside for a witch to infiltrate, everyone assumed it was you, an outsider.”
Chrome shrugged as if pitying her, but he didn’t seem to genuinely sympathize with her situation. His tone was indifferent, even cold.
It was as if he despised the knights.
