“Uh, yeah…… you could say it’s a similar conclusion.”

The conversation kept skirting the truth, but Rubel seemed satisfied enough.

At least he felt less guilty, knowing he wasn’t dealing with a completely hopeless sinner.

“That’s a relief.”

He muttered to himself and made the sign of the cross.

Since he didn’t seem to expect a response, Eir quietly continued eating. Rubel finished a short prayer and opened his eyes to look at her.

“Then how did you know about me?”

Another crisis arrived. Eir lost her appetite and put down her fork.

What should she say? Saying she saw him in the capital would imply that a witch had infiltrated the capital, and bringing up the purification squad from three years ago would naturally make him think she was part of the witch group that attacked them.

After some thought, Eir chose the safest answer.

“Uh, well…… you’ve been famous since you were young.”

“Me? Even among witch groups?”

“Fame isn’t limited to one place, you know.”

It was true. From the moment he picked up a sword, his fame reached even the priest schools in Eir’s region.

“That’s surprising.”

Rubel replied, and the conversation seemed to move on.

Eir sighed in relief and pretended to eat a little more, but in the end, she had to throw up everything she ate due to her weak stomach and the stress.

***

It wasn’t until night that she felt a little better.

Rubel stayed by her side, nursing her with a worried expression. Eir, knowing Rubel had promised to help with something that evening, told him it was okay to go, but he insisted it was fine and that the old man would understand.

As he placed a damp cloth on her forehead, Eir looked at him with renewed curiosity.

She knew Rubel was the type to keep his promises, even if it killed him.

So why had he broken his promise without a word for her sake?

‘You can tell him tomorrow. Don’t worry too much about it.’

His words were so strange that Eir kept glancing at him as he sat in the chair.

“Why do you keep looking at me?”

Rubel, who had been resting his cheek on his hand with his eyes closed, suddenly spoke. Even with his eyes closed, he seemed to sense her gaze.

“Why don’t you go see the old man now? I’m really fine.”

“Why are you so concerned about that? It’s not a big deal.”

Eir wiped the water from the damp cloth that had dripped onto her ear and replied.

“Well, you don’t like breaking promises, right?”

“Did that get around as gossip? Or is that something you observed about me?”

Eir wondered what answer he was hoping for and replied.

“Well…… I don’t think you’re a hard person to figure out. You even went out of your way to visit villages near your travel route.”

At that, he quietly opened his eyes.

His gaze held an indescribable light. It felt strange to think that she had been watching him and making judgments about him.

“I just like to handle my responsibilities well.”

“Exactly. So why don’t you go handle your responsibilities now?”

He frowned slightly, looking confused.

“I’m handling them right now. My responsibility.”

“Huh?”

Eir blinked and pointed at herself lying in bed. He smirked and nodded.

“Yes. Responsibilities have priorities, and I’ve decided that taking care of you is my top priority right now. Is that strange?”
