Chapter 51
A momentβs misunderstanding
On a leisurely evening, Sia was alone in her room making something. Life had been so dull lately that she had no choice but to do at least this.
βIs this what overprotection is?β
Nox, who used to have her do even the smallest things, changed completely from the day she got hurt. Just as heβd said, he really didnβt ask her to do anything.
Sia had to endure boredom along with a slight sense of betrayal at the fact that she could do by herself all the things Nox used to assign her. It would have been better if he had sent her somewhere else, but even while asking nothing of her, he insisted on keeping her by his side.
So lately, what she did was sit on the sofa placed right next to Noxβs work desk. Simply sitting there was boring, so she would sometimes look at the books he left for her to read, but since most of them were history books, not a single one was fun.
Of course, it helped. She came to know the Pelles Empire better.
βThis place has been inhabited only by werebeasts for far longer than I thought. There isnβt a single story about humans.β
Of course, she hadnβt read those thick history books all the way through, so she didnβt know the details yet, but even a look at the table of contents showed nothing about humans.
βHaah, then how weak must I have looked to Lord Nox.β
Just looking at Karin, her movements were lightning fast. Then how quick must the mercenary patrons who frequented the place be. She didnβt even need to look far. Even Noxβs movements alone were incredible.
βJudging by the way he leapt not just from rock to rock but across a whole ravine in one go, someone like me who merely slipped on the stairs must have seemed utterly unreliable.β
But she couldnβt go on like this. It had only been a few days of a βprotectedβ life, yet she was so bored she felt like she might die.
βI should relieve this boredom with my dear Lips.β
At least, thanks to Lips returning at night, it wasnβt boring all day long. Sia tied string to a twig, lifted a cat-only toy adorned with various feathers, and shook it.
βItβs finished!β
Hehe, how much will my Lips likes it.
βIt took a bit of time to gather fallen bird feathers from the rear garden by color, but it looks pretty decent.β
It was a real shame that the only thing she kept stocked in her bag was cat treats. If she were in Korea, she would have bought all kinds of cat toys and played with them.
βWhen will you come, my Lips.β
No sooner had she finished speaking than a cry came from the balcony. Excited, Sia quickly got up and opened the balcony door.
βLips, you came? Youβre back a little early today?β
βNyaaaang.β
βHuh?β
Seeing the shape of a black cat, Sia naturally thought it was Lips, but at the sight of Cola, whom she hadnβt seen in a long time, her eyes went perfectly round.
βCola!β
Overjoyed, Sia scooped up Cola in a hug and first checked to see if there were any injuries. After looking here and there and confirming even the fur was fluffy and clean, she let out a sigh of relief and muttered.
βWhat a relief. Oh right, this isnβt the time. Wait a moment, Cola. Iβll give you something to eat.β
As she stood to take out the bag she kept under the bed, she froze in shock at a voice that suddenly sounded.
βHumanβ¦β
ββ¦β¦β
βThank you for cherishing my messenger.β
βU-Ughβ¦β
It wasnβt a sound heard through her ears. At the voice that drove straight into her head, Sia trembled all over.
βThere is nothing to fear. I am the one who brought you hereβ¦β
ββ¦You brought, me here?β
βI have been waiting for a kindhearted human who would love my messenger to appear.β
βIt isnβt a lion, itβs a catβ¦β
(T/N: The word in Korean for βmessengerβ is a homonym for βlionβ)
βHaha, what an amusing human.β
Unable to believe what was happening, Sia wanted to escape into nonsense, but she couldnβt ignore the words that followed from the unknown being.
βFor the sake of fairness, I have appeared to give you options as well. Will you hear them?β
The voice seemed cool-headed, yet its tone felt strangely warm. Sia had a feeling she needed to listen closely to this.
βThe werebeasts periodically require a human. Since I prefer humans who love animals, each time I have brought a human who loves animals through my messenger.β
βAre you saying it wasnβt a coincidence that I came here by following Cola?β
βThat is so. I was moved by your warm heart and brought you. But you wish to find a way to return to your homeland, do you not?β
ββ¦Because that is the world I lived in.β
βIf you wish to remain here, I shall bestow abilities upon you. If you wish to return to your homeland, then right now follow my messenger. Whichever you choose, I will aid youβ¦β
