Chapter 34
“Every time you push me away, resentment builds, and it ends up spilling over onto the child too… Right now, I’m not sure I could love your child more than Emily’s.”
Murmuring that even loving her, and trying to cherish the child she carried, was becoming exhausting, Carlos let out a tired smile.
The pounding of her heart roared in her ears. Desperate, Brunhilde clung to him.
“Please, Carlos. Don’t abandon Mother… don’t abandon your child. Please.”
“I’ve never abandoned either you or the child. It was you who pushed me away.”
“I was wrong. I only wanted you to escape the curse of this family…”
Gripping his clothes, she broke down into sobs.
Carlos looked down at her with cold eyes for a moment, then let out a long sigh and turned back toward her. Taking hold of her hair, he spoke quietly,
“Why don’t you understand? The child in your womb is the clearest proof of the curse. That child itself is the product of it. There’s no way the curse will end before this issue is resolved.”
“Ah… I was foolish… I didn’t think—”
“If you truly want to break the curse, you need to think about how to safely conceal the child’s origins first.”
He smoothed her slightly damp hair and tucked it behind her ear. Then, looking down at her tear-streaked face, he spoke as if instructing her,
“If you keep pushing me away like this, it becomes harder for me to grow attached to the child.”
“…Yes…”
“And then problems arise, even with something as fundamental as adopting the child into the family.”
“I—I was wrong, my child… it’s all my fault, so please…”
Her face, pleading and pitiful, trembled with desperation. Carlos lowered his lips to her tear-filled eyes, catching the tears that continued to fall.
“I’ve told you before. Only if you and I grow closer will my bond with the child deepen as well. And only then will things proceed smoothly after the birth.”
“Yes… I remember…”
“So don’t act like this again. You’re only driving a wedge between me and the child.”
“Of course… I won’t, I won’t ever again…”
She nodded repeatedly, unable even to speak properly through her sobs. Pressing his lips briefly to her temple, he added,
“And don’t ever lay a hand on Emily’s baby again. Understood?”
She wanted to protest—that she had done no such thing—but fear of angering him again held her tongue. Instead, Brunhilde bowed her head meekly, grateful just for this fragile chance.
Carlos leisurely traced his tongue along the tear-wet corners of her eyes, even brushing over her damp lashes, before speaking in a softer tone,
“There’s no need for you to be jealous of Emily. I only have you.”
“…Mm.”
“In the first place, I only married her because you told me to. Of course, now that we’re married, it’s true that her child will be recognized as my legitimate heir…”
He pressed a soft kiss to her eyelid, then pulled back slightly, watching her disheveled, tear-streaked face as he murmured,
“But whether it’s a wife or a concubine, legitimate or illegitimate—their place depends on the husband’s favor, doesn’t it?”
“Yes… everything you say is right.”
“So as long as you have my favor, the child you’re carrying will never be inferior to the legitimate heir.”
His hand spread gently over her abdomen.
At that touch, some of the tension in her chest eased. Letting out a long breath, Brunhilde leaned her forehead against his shoulder.
As he softly stroked her back, Carlos spoke again, his voice low,
“Then, Mother…”
“Yes…?”
“It’s been a while. I’d like to feel the child again. That’s all right, isn’t it?”
“….”
For a fleeting moment, Brunhilde nearly showed her hesitation.
It sounded ordinary enough on the surface—but given their history, it was clearly a request with s****l intent.
Yet her reflexive resistance melted away like summer snow at the thought of the scene she had just caused. She nodded as if she hadn’t hesitated for a single moment, and spread her legs.
He kissed her head, as if praising a well-trained pet, and his hand slipped between her thighs. The sensation of his fingers pushing inside was sharp and cold, but Brunhilde endured it with all her might—just as she had when receiving her dead husband.
“I haven’t touched you in a while, but your womb seems quite swollen.”
“Mm… ngh…”
“Are you uncomfortable?”
“It’s still fine. My belly is barely… hngh… showing… and…”
His fingers moved inside her like small fish, rubbing against sensitive spots. Brunhilde bit her lip hard to stifle the moans threatening to escape.
Her son teased her insides for a while, then withdrew his hand.
Left hanging just before her peak, Brunhilde’s breath came out in hot, ragged gasps.
He watched his mother, flushed with unsatisfied desire, then reached out an arm. Pulling her slender shoulders into his embrace, he whispered:
“Now that things have come to this, I’d like to make you a proposal, Mother.”
“Speak… my child…”
“I refrained from sleeping with Emily, as you wanted, and held back alone for months… and now my c**k has gotten this big.”
