Chapter 114
After meeting Eugenie Norton, Richard used informants to fully support Carter.
“It’s confirmed Theodora Norton is connected to the wizard family Fay. It will take time to investigate who they are… Meanwhile, learn everything Eugenie likes.”
Carter did just that.
What Eugenie liked: Books. Cherries. Daisy flowers. Making plans but quitting halfway to do as she pleases.
What Eugenie disliked: Empty, flowery consolation. She preferred calm, fact-based persuasion.
They enrolled in the academy together. They were inseparable during classes, meals, and even sneaking out at night over the academy wall.
Eugenie’s life with Carter now far outnumbered the time without him.
And for Carter, the time without Eugenie was absurdly short.
From that moment, Carter sometimes wondered.
Am I the temple’s savior?
“Carter, how do you know me so well?”
Or was he simply someone made entirely to fit this girl?
When Eugenie hooked her arm around his and stuck out her tongue at seventeen, Carter asked himself the same question.
After all, they’d been together every day since she was five, memorizing everything sweetly…
“Eugenie, if you’re wondering how I knew you wanted waffles just now, maybe stop obsessively looking at waffle shop ads since last week?”
“When did I do that?!”
Eugenie grumbled unhappily while taking the waffles.
Carter also wanted to grumble—how could he not notice she’d been staring at dessert ads in the paper all last Monday, Wednesday, and Friday?
“Hmph. So it tastes bad? Should I eat them all myself?”
He’d gone out of his way to pick flavors she liked.
Though he could have used temple attendants, Carter preferred to do things himself when it came to Eugenie Norton.
He enjoyed seeing how pleased she was with his choices. It gave him a thrill of having hit the mark.
It was the only pleasure in his duty-bound life.
Eugenie took a neat bite of waffle and gave him a sharp look.
“I never said I wasn’t going to eat it. Seriously…”
“I’ll take that as a thank you, Eugenie Morgan Norton.”
“Hmph… One day I’ll bury you, Carter Arthur Livingston.”
“Why? For being such a good friend who even buys you desserts?”
“You know me too well. My embarrassing past needs to disappear.”
“Ah, scary.”
Carter shrugged casually.
But inside, he snorted at Eugenie’s words.
Disappear? Don’t make me laugh. Why would I disappear from your life? How long have I stuck by your side? Do you even know how much effort I put in secretly at the academy to keep my place next to you?
He smiled slyly and emphasized,
“But I’ll stay by your side, Eugenie.”
So don’t even dream of pushing me away. You’re mine forever. I won’t give you to anyone.
Eugenie just laughed at that.
“Fine, I get it.”
At that moment, Carter was sure Eugenie Norton would never betray him. And he never had any intention of confessing out of anger.
Why would he? After standing by Eugenie Norton’s side for so long, why throw it all away?
At least until an intruder interfered, he thought so.
“Eugenie Norton… what the hell is that pathetic mess?”
“Ugh!”
“A senior walking around eating food?”
A familiar silver-haired figure blocked the two walking through the academy grounds with waffles.
Eugenie’s face twisted in an instant as she swallowed. Carter’s brows furrowed at the sight.
He made her smile by feeding her, so why is she scowling because of that bastard?
Carter raised his eyebrows at the one blocking their path.
“Napier… why are you here again?”
Magnus Napier.
He was a thorn in their side.
Then, now, always.
