Had Eugenie ever seen Carter cry before?

“Let’s be friends, Eugenie.”

She remembered the day they first met at age five—Carter had been the one to reach out to her first. Back then, Eugenie had been all alone, so his gesture meant everything.

“How do you always know me so well?”

Carter had never once hurt her. When she was young, she’d even believed he was her soulmate, because every moment they spent together was pure happiness.

She thought he felt the same. He always seemed happy, whether he was gently teasing her or pointing out her clumsy mistakes.

So on the rare occasions when Carter looked bored or detached from everything, it always felt off to her. In those moments, it was as if the Carter she knew simply vanished.

Still, she chalked it up to the stress of inheriting the priesthood, and Carter always returned to his usual smiling self before long.

“Carter…”

But now, he was crying.

His face was red on one side from her slap, yet he smiled through his tears. Even if a statue of a god carved by a famous artist had miraculously started to cry, it wouldn’t have shocked her as much as this did.

Just then, the chimes of the clocktower echoed from outside.

Dong… Dong…

“Ah.”

Eugenie let out a small sigh as the chimes continued. Wasn’t someone supposed to come see her at 10pm tonight? Her legs still shaky, she hurried to her feet.

Damn this shirt. Now it was good for nothing except losing its buttons. Wrapping a robe hastily over herself, she rushed toward the door.

“I… Let’s talk later, Carter.”

But before she could fully open the door, Carter caught up to her in just a few strides, as if his tears had been nothing but a dream. He looked down at Eugenie with the cold detachment of a marble statue.

“Do you have an appointment right now?”

“Carter—”

“At this hour?”

His voice was so chilling it seemed to seep into her chest. Her mouth went dry, and her legs trembled beyond her control. The aftermath of his mouth on her body still lingered, making it hard to think straight about what was right or wrong.

Yet Carter hadn’t even begun.

He considered who might be waiting for Eugenie at this hour.

“…That won’t do.”

Whoever it was—if Eugenie was unconsciously looking forward to it.

Click. The sound of the lock sliding into place was sharp and final. Carter scooped Eugenie up with ease and carried her right back to the bed.

“You’re not going anywhere tonight.”

“Let—let me go!”

“Not unless you’re willing to leave with my scent all over you.”

Is he crazy? Eugenie glared, seeing Carter’s flawless face spitting out the filthiest words.

‘I should use magic.’

She couldn’t bring herself to actually hurt Carter, but immobilizing him—that she could try. Even if he’d accused her of pretending to care for someone now, the guilt of those missing six years weighed too heavily. But who said attacking was the only option?

‘I just need to stop him from moving…!’

Eugenie pressed down on Carter’s shoulders and concentrated, imagining the same kind of magical restraints she’d used to calm Percival. But just as she tried to focus, Carter pressed a steadying hand to her back.

Suddenly, a surge of blue lightning seemed to explode behind her eyes, and Eugenie gasped, her body jolting uncontrollably. It was as if electricity crackled through every vein, overwhelming her with a shocking mix of pain and pleasure.

Carter chuckled as he watched her tremble.

“I never told you, did I, Eugenie?”

“Ugh…!”

“I can use divine powers. Didn’t I say so when I gave you the bullet?”

“The… bullet…?”

He’d told her the bullets were a Livingston family heirloom, hadn’t he? But Carter leaned in, kissing her forehead as he whispered.

“That’s my own power, too.”

“Hh… ah, ugh…”

“I never lied—you just never asked, right?”

He pulled open Eugenie’s robe, tossing it aside, revealing the bite-marked, flushed skin of her chest in the lamplight.

Despite his appreciation for the beautiful sight, Carter’s tone was harsh.

“What were you planning to do, meeting someone else with these marks?”

“Ah, mm—!”

“Wasn’t it enough for everyone to see outside?”

He’d reached his limit, too. His member was obvious now as he freed himself, the tip already slick and ready.

“Eugenie.”

Carter pressed his lips to the pale skin of her inner thigh as he murmured.
