Chapter 16
Tears welled in Aniella’s eyes at the winner’s taunt. It was childish, but she wanted to turn her head away because she couldn’t stand the sight of him. But she couldn’t actually do it. She was so hungry that her gaze inadvertently drifted to the cookie he was eating so deliciously.
Infuriatingly, little Philip even sucked the crumbs off his fingers. Aniella bit her lip tightly and pleaded with the maid.
“You have no idea how hard I worked to catch these. I’ve never caught anything like a dragonfly in my life; today was my first time trying.”
“I’m sorry, Miss.”
“I invested all the money I had. Even if not all of them, couldn’t you please buy just five? Just five?”
“Your situation is pitiable, but there’s nothing I can do. If I did something like that on my own, I’d lose my head.”
What difference would 2,000 or 2,005 make? All together, no one would even notice. It’s not like she’d actually lose her head.
Aniella clung to the maid, begging her to please help. Just as the maid was trying to peel her off with a troubled expression, two very rough-looking men arrived at the Duke’s residence. The two men carried large sacks on their shoulders, sacks big enough to hold a person.
“Tell His Grace we’re here to deliver what he ordered.”
The two men spoke to the maid. She saw the blood dripping from the sacks and let out a shriek.
“I always tell you to use the side door, not the main entrance! Do you have any idea how hard it is to get blood out once it soaks into the carpet!”
Aniella, who had been imagining why the sacks were so large, shot up from her spot. So the Duke’s infamous reputation was well-deserved. The thought that it would be dangerous to stubbornly stay here any longer made cold sweat break out on her skin.
There was still a way. If she couldn’t sell it to Duke Paiki, there was another wizard. She could just sell it to a wizard named Marius. Although she didn’t know where he lived.
“Are you going to Marius?”
As she trudged out of the ducal residence, the little Philip caught up and asked. Aniella glanced at him once and, without a word, walked quickly.
An adult who had gone hungry all day couldn’t maintain such a fast pace. Even with his short legs, little Philip could catch up to her without difficulty.
“Do you know where Marius lives?”
“…….”
“You don’t, right?”
“Go away. I don’t have the energy to play with you.”
“I’ll tell you.”
As if he felt responsible for the bed that had become unsellable, he took the lead. Aniella stared silently at the back of little Philip’s head before finally following him.
“Aniella, in exchange for me telling you where Marius’s house is, come play at my house tomorrow. They say my brother is returning tomorrow, so a feast is planned.”
“Your brother is returning and there’s a feast, so why should I come to play?”
“It’s good if you can eat delicious food, right? Isn’t it okay?”
At her cold response, little Philip looked back, his face sullen. Aniella shook her head to say no, but unfortunately, a loud grumble came from her stomach.
Young Philip regained his usual smile.
“Right? You’ll come?”
“I don’t mind going, but if I interrupt your cozy family meal, your mother won’t like it.”
“I’ll talk to Mother tonight!”
Little Philip declared confidently. He seemed determined to pester her until she was invited.
Aniella was skeptical. No matter how much the cute youngest pleaded, his mother would refuse. That lady disliked the Mullier people. It wasn’t just dislike; it was almost like hatred.
It was understandable why she disliked Mullier. It was because her husband had been persuaded by Viscount Mullier to invest in a business and suffered a huge loss.
