Chapter 3
The moment one of the monsters that had poured out like a swarm of insects landed on the ground.
Slash!
A golden aura that came flying from somewhere severed the monster’s neck.
“Holy Knights, prepare for battle immediately!”
Arle, Commander of the Holy Knights and owner of the aura, surveyed his surroundings with a hardened expression.
‘What in the world is happening?’
Demonic beasts that only inhabited the outskirts of the continent were falling onto God’s holy land.
On top of that, these demonic beasts looked unlike anything he had ever seen before.
They had never appeared even during previous subjugation campaigns.
“Commander, don’t these things seem a little strange?”
“Sir Raphael.”
Arle’s expression stiffened even further.
Vice Commander Raphael, who had approached while retrieving his sword, was still half-naked.
“Ah, every second counts. What do you expect me to do? Demonic beasts showed up, and I’m supposed to stop and put my clothes back on?”
“Raphael, there is a proper time for following God’s will…”
Slash!
Raphael raised his sword in a flash and cleaved through the torso of a charging demonic beast, then lifted an eyebrow.
“Is now really the time to be saying that?”
“…They’re stronger than the demonic beasts we’ve encountered before.”
“Looks like it. My hands are tingling like crazy.”
Even as he answered jokingly, he swept his cold gaze across their surroundings.
The number of demonic beasts was increasing without end.
“Raphael, lead the knights and help evacuate our brothers and sisters. I’ll go to the Saintess.”
“Let’s do that.”
“May God protect you.”
Arle leaped forward and plunged into the swarm of demonic beasts in the corridor.
Slash! Crunch!
In an instant, the demonic beasts’ heads went flying through the air.
Behind him, Raphael began running in the opposite direction and led the knights.
“Everyone, spread out! Prioritize saving the weaker members of the clergy!”
* * *
The monster raised its sharp claws toward me.
‘No!’
My vision went white.
That was when it happened.
Slash!
One of the monster’s legs traced a wide arc through the air before landing in front of me with a thud.
At the same time, a rough voice rang out.
“Hey. Nun, you okay?”
I snapped my head up.
Pale sky-blue eyes stood out against vivid black hair.
Vice Commander Raphael frowned deeply as he looked back and forth between the monster and me.
“Y-Yes, yes!”
I couldn’t even speak properly.
But what sent an even worse chill through me was the fact that the monster’s severed leg was slowly growing back.
Raphael clicked his tongue.
“Normally, something should be dead after getting stabbed up this badly.”
He readjusted his grip on his sword.
Not wanting to get in his way, I tried to move aside.
“Ugh!”
But the moment I stood up, my legs gave out and I collapsed.
I had no choice.
If I couldn’t walk, then I’d just have to crawl.
‘Commando crawl.’
My arms had gone weak too, so I was practically rolling rather than crawling, but rolling definitely made me move faster.
Yet all my desperate effort was for nothing, because Raphael caught up to me in just a few steps.
“Seriously, you’re something else.”
He sighed, then grabbed me around the waist and lifted me up.
Then he slung me over one shoulder.
“Urk! Put me down! I can run away just fine by myself!”
“Sure you can.”
“Put me down!”
“Shh, be quiet.”
No matter how much I pleaded, he didn’t listen at all.
I had no choice but to hold my breath.
That monster was the type that chased noise.
Raphael raised his sword toward the monster.
His eyes narrowed sharply.
“What an annoying bastard. How am I supposed to kill it?”
“Y-You have to cut off its head.”
Raphael glanced toward me.
“How do you know that?”
“…Maybe its face is so disgusting that I just want it finished off before I have to look at it any longer?”
“What are you even saying?”
Raphael snorted, but he still aimed his sword precisely at its neck.
Then he took a deep breath.
The moment he swung his greatsword downward, sword energy burst from the monster’s neck.
Slaaash!
Its head flew up into the air, and after a slight delay, the torso still planted on the ground scattered away like black smoke.
Raphael stared down at his sword for a moment, then glanced at me trembling on his shoulder.
“…That worked?”
