Leticia’s gaze, which had briefly lingered on Vallon, returned to the person in front of her.

“Leticia, eat this.”

It was Eric, the one who had consistently shown interest in her since they had joined the academy. What he held out was a piece of bread, emitting a savory scent.

Leticia, who had skipped breakfast in her rush, thought it was perfect timing and was about to take the bread from him.

“Wow, I love this kind of bread! Thanks, I’ll enjoy it—”

Thud.

But the bread never made it to Leticia’s hand.

Just as their hands were about to meet, Vallon squeezed in between them. The bread fell to the ground and was promptly crushed under Vallon’s foot. Even though it seemed unlikely, his unsettling action felt like a warning.

Both their gazes turned toward Vallon, who had come between them.

When did he get here? She was surprised to see that the Vallon, who had been standing near the door just a moment ago, was now right in front of her.

A large shadow loomed over Leticia. Just a moment ago, the bright morning sunlight had been shining where she stood, but now it felt like she had been moved to a shady spot where the sun no longer reached.

“W-What are you doing? Why are you interrupting?”

Eric, his expression one of disbelief, confronted Vallon. Vallon looked back and forth between Eric and Leticia, who was also staring in shock, then walked forward as if nothing had happened.

Of all the paths he could have taken, why did he choose this one? It felt strange.

It all seemed too deliberate.

Leticia felt uncomfortable, as if Vallon’s dark energy was about to rub off on her. Despite feeling sorry for him, she knew he was someone she absolutely did not want to get involved with. As she was thinking of drawing a clear boundary to prevent any false sense of closeness, Eric shouted again.

“Hey! Don’t you understand when someone talks to you?”

Eric reached out to grab Vallon’s shoulder as he tried to pass by, but he couldn’t. Though he hadn’t twisted his foot, it felt as if someone had grabbed him by the collar and forcefully pulled him to the ground.

“Ugh!!”

As Vallon calmly sidestepped, Eric lost his balance, crashing headfirst into the corner of a desk with a loud thud and passing out. The impact was so strong that the sturdy desk corner shattered.

It all happened in an instant.

Every eye in the classroom was suddenly fixed on Vallon. Seeing the blood pouring from Eric’s head, people began whispering that Vallon had pushed him.

“Kyaa! Vallon pushed Eric!”

“There’s blood coming from his head—he’s not dead, is he?”

“Is he… dead?”

“Someone, go get a professor!”

The classroom was thrown into chaos.

Vallon hadn’t laid a finger on Eric—not a single hair. Leticia, who had seen everything up close, wanted to explain that Vallon hadn’t pushed him, but she was too shocked to speak. All Vallon had done was avoid being shoved by Eric.

“Ah…”

A considerable amount of blood flowed from Eric’s head, staining the floor a deep crimson. Leticia had never seen this much blood in her life.

“Ugh…”

What had started as a pleasant Monday morning quickly turned into a nightmare.

The blood pooling at the soles of her shoes was nauseating and terrifying. The metallic scent of the blood overwhelmed her senses.

Could a person really bleed this much?

Was he truly dead? It was just a bump against a desk, right? The thought that Eric, who had been laughing with her just moments ago, might be dead made it hard for her to grasp reality. Was this a dream?

It couldn’t be. For some reason, even though she wasn’t at fault, Leticia felt a pang of guilt, as if she were somehow responsible for what had happened to Eric. Trembling, she called out his name softly.

“Er-Eric…?”

Vallon, seemingly indifferent to all the murmurs around him, casually nudged Eric aside with his foot, as if clearing away trash.

He stepped on Eric’s fingers, crushing them underfoot like pebbles on the street.

Crack, crack.

She heard the sound of the fingers that had just been offering her bread breaking. But Leticia was the only one who witnessed the scene.

It was a sight that made her doubt her own eyes.

What did I just see? Is that something a normal person would do?

Seeing Vallon show no reaction, even though someone lay bleeding heavily on the ground, filled her with a deep sense of revulsion.
