If that was the case, then surely he didn’t harbor very good feelings toward her either. Cynthia suddenly felt an ominous chill.

Watching Cynthia’s various shifting expressions, Segleninde laughed.

“I don’t particularly like humans. But I don’t hate them, either. They’re a necessary component of my existence… You know, like how no one hates air or water. Isn’t that right?”

“…….”

“Ah, maybe that analogy wasn’t quite right. Judging by your face, it doesn’t seem so. Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that there’s no way I’d ever come to dislike you.”

He liked Cynthia. She was neither air nor water, but to him, she was someone even more important than that.

Even if she hadn’t smelled sweet, even if she’d smelled foul and been covered head to toe in filth, he was sure he would still have hugged her and nipped at the tip of her nose.

“When I watch all your funny little antics, I lose track of time.”

The way she’d glare at him and bare her fangs, only to secretly grab his sleeve from behind. The sound of her softly breathing, even snoring a little in her sleep. Even the way her small tongue and lips would quietly tangle with his whenever they kissed after she hurled harsh words at him. All of it was adorable.

So even when he was angry, he could only melt.

He’d thought about pretending to gnaw her blushing cheeks the moment she woke up, just to scare her and say he’d eat her up, one bite at a time, every day for deceiving him. But then, even in her sleep, she would whimper and squirm, reaching out as if she was definitely looking for him. He couldn’t help but go easy on her.

Her movements were like a baby animal searching for its mother, and he’d even thought about nibbling her toes, but when she whimpered, he let that go as well. And then, as if she were babbling, he listened carefully and heard her repeatedly sniffling, asking for forgiveness.

Well, then, what choice did he have but to forgive her? If his woman was so sorry that she begged for forgiveness even in her sleep, it was no trouble to simply let it go. He was, after all, a most generous lover.

That’s right. In truth, it didn’t matter at all whether she was a fake fiancée or not. To Segleninde, Cynthia was already his woman, and he was Cynthia’s man. Once decided, that was a relationship that would never change. Lies or not, it was all meaningless. That alone was the truth and the reality.

Of course, since Cynthia couldn’t read his mind, her feelings were rather sour.

‘He says my antics are funny. What, am I a clown? Is he kidding me? The more I think about it, isn’t that an insult?’

“That’s an insult. Are you kidding me… Ah.”

Having exposed everything, this was no time to be spouting off in front of the villain who could easily kill her. Cynthia shut her mouth and nervously watched him. Segleninde gave her a look of disbelief and laughed.

But it wasn’t a bad reaction at all. If anything, he seemed to be in a good mood.

“What are you so startled for? Treat me like you did before. Nothing’s changed. And how is that even an insult? Honestly, you have a real talent for twisting things.”

Segleninde’s response was so tolerant as to feel almost magnanimous. Cynthia eyed him suspiciously. By now, she just had to ask.

“…What do you want from me? Why are you keeping me alive? Now you know I was a fake, you know I lied to you.”

“How can you even call that a question right now…”

Segleninde’s brow furrowed, and Cynthia’s expression, which had been growing a little bolder, immediately wilted.

She thought maybe it was still too soon to stop watching his mood, so she shrank her shoulders and bowed her head, which made him look even more displeased. Then, when she wasn’t looking, he started biting at his own lips in frustration.

But seriously, how could she call that a question.

Every time he saw her, he was filled with affection. She was adorable, and just meeting her gaze made him want to laugh out loud.

Wasn’t it obvious there was a reason to keep her alive by his side? Lies were now truly a trivial matter. This human was, in any case, just too lovable, even if she had no sense.

Segleninde also couldn’t bring himself to be honest. He was good at hiding his true feelings when deceiving prey, but for some reason, in front of Cynthia, it was never easy to tell her the truth.

He had never communicated so deeply or for so long with any other living thing before. This was the first time he’d ever chosen to do so, too.

So, in the end, his answer was simple.

“I want to take a bite out of you every time I see you.”

“……”
