Chapter 155
Segleninde told her various stories beyond that.
For example, he would now bring up stories about himself, like things he used to always keep hidden. He shared them without hesitation.
He had lived for a long time as a being who did not know his own origin, and until he met her, he didn’t even know what emotions were. He had always thought that the emotions possessed by living beings only made them more fragile.
And in truth, after coming to know emotions, he had become weaker—a wretched being who could be shaken by even the smallest loneliness. But all of that had been brought about by his own foolishness, so he could only blame himself.
He realized that the reason why those with emotions become weaker is because emotions force you to face your own ignorance head-on.
He had truly been foolish. Truly, he had been stupid.
[But…]
On the screen, he spoke in a voice that seemed to be withering away.
[I was wrong, it’s all my fault.] [I don’t care if I have to die by your hand again and again…] [If only that could be enough to repay my sins…]
Sia sat with her back to the laptop screen.
So even though she couldn’t see what Segleninde was saying, a sharp intuition prickled her spine, and she finally turned to look at the screen.
Segleninde was no longer visible, only the words he left behind floated there. Knowing that she didn’t want to see him, he had hidden himself before she could turn around.
She struggled not to let her heart soften. No matter how pitifully he spoke, it didn’t matter. After acting that way, for all she knew, he could just be trying to deceive her again.
Did he really think that just because they’d slept together a few times, just because they’d spent time together and shared feelings in the last cycle, that she was soft enough to forgive someone who had killed her dozens of times?
‘…Well, actually, I guess I am soft.’
She had to admit it. She had come to care for him, and for that world.
If she’d only had memories from the first round up to the round where she became a mage, it wouldn’t have been possible.
No matter how much she’d seen the process of him developing affection for her, and even if she’d almost fallen for it a few times, there was no reason to love someone who’d killed her so many times.
But ‘Cynthia Obel’—that round was the variable.
Two beings who knew nothing, filling a blank slate with nothing but each other, had left a memory that was far too vivid. And perhaps because it was the last round, the feelings she developed for Segleninde as ‘Cynthia Obel’ remained as the clearest memory in her mind.
So Sia didn’t want to take revenge by killing him over and over.
But she didn’t want to forgive him easily, either.
She didn’t even know what she wanted to do. With a heavy sigh and a complicated feeling, she lowered her head.
And then, a message notification went off on the phone by her leg.
“…Team Leader Kang?”
She was the superior who’d been let go at the same time as Shin Sia, when they’d both been laid off under the guise of ‘recommended resignation’ at their previous company.
With many years of experience and a reputation for handling the work of five people by herself, no one had expected her to be fired.
—Sia-ssi! Long time no see! Have you been well?? The reason I’m messaging is—by any chance, have you already found a job? If not, would you be interested in working with me?
Team Leader Kang had apparently started a business she’d been planning even before leaving the company.
She had already hired employees, and through her network, had secured investments early on. She’d always been sharp, so it was no surprise that the business was going well from the start.
Team Leader Kang, now CEO Kang, offered Sia a job.
—The job will be similar to what you used to do at the company! You were a total pro at it, so I reached out to you first, haha. If you’re free, want to meet tomorrow?
In truth, Sia had always been good at her job, to the point where she was constantly in demand for overtime, and she had been on friendly terms with Team Leader Kang as well.
Still, she hadn’t expected to get a job offer like this, and as she read the playful message, she couldn’t help but feel a bit dazed.
