Chapter 17
‘Is he really planning to betray me? Maybe they added an event to make the protagonist taste despair?’
Unless there was some convincing reason, there was no way that brutal game developer would let the villain so easily become an ally to the protagonist. Cynthia began to wonder if she should look for a chance to escape.
But just as she was hesitating, the duke spoke up.
“To tell the truth… it’s really strange, but.”
“…What is?”
“Most of my memories from before I fell asleep back there are gone.”
“Pardon?”
Cynthia replied as if struck by lightning. The duke ran his hands over his face again and again, as if washing it.
“I remember that I’m the owner of this mansion, that I invited guests today and held a banquet, and that I fell asleep while preparing for it… but other than that, nothing. Were we acquainted, by any chance?”
Cynthia’s expression brightened, as if she’d spotted a light in a fog. This development seemed like a sign that, at last, the cursed game’s story was starting to move in a direction extremely favorable to her.
Not wanting to miss this rare opportunity, she racked her brain and spoke as cleverly as she could.
“I thought something was off from the beginning, but… you really can’t remember anything at all?”
Please, please say you can’t remember a thing. Please.
In her heart, Cynthia prayed to every god she could think of. The duke looked at her for a moment, then dropped his gaze and pressed his lips together. His beautiful silver hair fell around him like a bird’s wings.
After a moment of silence, as if lost in thought, he finally spoke.
“…I don’t know. Not at all.”
Ding—
Just as Cynthia was about to give the answer she’d prepared, a set of choices suddenly appeared.
1- Sob. You really don’t remember? You don’t remember what kind of relationship we had? 2- We’re lovers. We’re engaged to be married. 3- We were mortal enemies who killed each other over and over. This time, I’ll be the one to kill you.
System, you are my enemy. You bastard.
Grinding her teeth, Cynthia selected option 1.
She’d been planning to ask something similar anyway, and it seemed better to nudge him to say option 2 himself if possible, to make the situation feel more natural. Option 3 wasn’t even worth considering.
A tearful voice slipped from Cynthia’s lips.
“Sob… You really don’t remember? You don’t remember what kind of relationship we had?”
“I’m asking because I don’t remember.”
2- We’re lovers. We’re engaged to be married. 3- We were mortal enemies who killed each other over and over. This time, I’ll be the one to kill you.
But the same choices appeared again. Wondering why, Cynthia chose option 1 again.
“Sob… You really don’t remember? You don’t remember what kind of relationship we had?”
“I told you, I don’t.”
2- We’re lovers. We’re engaged to be married. 3- We were mortal enemies who killed each other over and over. This time, I’ll be the one to kill you.
‘Is this a joke?’
By now, Cynthia was getting stubborn and chose option 1 once more.
“Sob… You really don’t remember? You don’t remember what kind of relationship we had?”
“I already said that I don’t. Why do you keep asking?”
2- We’re lovers. We’re engaged to be married. 3- We were mortal enemies who killed each other over and over. This time, I’ll be the one to kill you.
