Chapter 30
The way you die when you’re caught is a little different depending on the location.
In the kitchen, if you’re caught, you get thrown into a pot and boiled alive. If you’re caught just as you’re about to leave, you’re dragged away, hung from the ceiling hooks, and your blood is drained.
Cynthia never wanted to experience those gruesome fates in reality, even if they happened to game characters.
Heavy footsteps approached the table.
Cynthia held her breath and curled up. The footsteps stopped right by the table, and she heard snuffling sounds, the cook sniffing from tabletop down to the floor.
Sniff, sniff sniff…
Grrrrr.
A harsh, phlegmy growl echoed from the hole where the Butcher Cook’s face should be. Cynthia’s spine froze, and she instinctively clung to the hem of Segleninde’s clothes beside her. His gaze slid down to her hand.
Then, the next moment—
The sudden message made Cynthia’s heart drop.
“Uh…”
But right after, a new set of choices popped up like a lifeline.
1- Use yourself as bait 2- Use Segleninde as bait 3- Fight the Butcher Cooks
But those choices only drove her deeper into despair.
All three were impossible.
There was no way to fight the Butcher Cooks. Like the Harvesters and most other mansion creatures, your only option was to avoid and run.
If she used Segleninde as bait, maybe she’d have a slightly better chance of survival.
Just then, Cynthia felt the warmth of his hand on her cheek and turned. Segleninde was silently touching her cheek, watching her pale, terrified face. His touch, for once, was oddly gentle. His red eyes quietly observed her.
He mouthed,
‘Hungry?’
Even now, he was saying ridiculous things.
‘Whatever. I don’t care anymore.’
Cynthia changed her mind. Not out of some useless guilt, but because she was afraid of what might come next. She decided to trust her agility stat. The moment she did—
GRRRRR!
Ding—
Two monstrous hands tore the tablecloth aside, and a new choice appeared.
4- Pretend to be the lady of the house and give the servants an order. (Pay 1 Luven.)
Seeing the red text, she didn’t hesitate.
As the Butcher Cooks roared and reached to drag her out, Cynthia quickly picked the new option.
Her body moved on its own. She dodged the grabbing hands, slipped out from under the table, and, as the Butcher Cooks turned their faceless heads her way, she shouted in a sharp, commanding voice,
“What is the meaning of this disgraceful behavior!”
Her voice rang out, unexpectedly loud and noble—even she barely recognized it. The Butcher Cooks actually froze in place.
It was well worth the single gold coin. Cynthia pressed her luck, bellowing again.
“Can’t you even recognize the lady of this house? Make way at once!”
Hearing it again, it sounded more like a line from an eastern historical drama than from a duchess, but it worked. The Butcher Cooks backed off and bowed their heads.
‘Wait, did it really work? Wow! Looks like it’s effective!’
Cynthia was marveling at the terrifying creatures bowing before her, when a cold, dangerous voice sounded behind her.
“You lot.”
Cynthia turned to see Segleninde, who had followed her out from under the table, now glaring at the cooks with murderous eyes.
The Butcher Cooks, seeing him approach, bowed even more deeply and quickly scrambled backward.
