This time, she would keep her promise. Whether it was a day, two days, or even a week, she would get up again.
“Ivonne…”
What was the problem? What has gone wrong? Why did this happen?
Ivonne’s hand was so emaciated that it felt almost wrong to hold it. If he did, it felt as though it would snap like a brittle twig, and he was too afraid to even touch a single finger.
So, Herix lowered his head and gently brushed his nose against her thin, twig-like fingers. The warmth that had always been there when she touched him had faded, and it saddened him.
Nothing could capture his attention. With Ivonne lying there like that, how could he focus on anything else? So, Herix didn’t sleep or eat. He stayed by her side like a statue, not knowing when she would wake.
It felt as though the time when they had embraced and loved each other so freely was from a distant past. It felt like a time he longed for, a time that had passed so far away.
All that was left now was exhaustion—a fatigue that far surpassed anything he had experienced before. He never expected to feel so powerless again, unable to do anything but watch, caught in this pitiful self-loathing.
Again, everything slipped through his fingers, and it felt like Ivonne would slip away as well. Herix clenched his fist.
“…”
The pain from his nails digging into his palm almost felt welcome. If blood pooled between his fingers, he thought, maybe it would be like sand sticking to wet hands, and in that blood, he imagined Ivonne would remain.
Had Johann, who came in briefly to ask for a signature, not panicked and treated him, Herix would have continued bleeding.
In truth, Ivonne wasn’t just sleeping. She was dreaming continuously. The dream allowed her to wake up intermittently, but each time she fell back asleep, it picked up exactly where she left off. And the content of the dream was incredibly detailed.
“So, to sum it up… is that I’m… pregnant?”
In those past moments, Ivonne had seen everything in the world created by Novnie. From the chaos of the beginning, the expanding paradise, the purple fox’s betrayal, and even her meeting with Herix.
Though she already knew all of this, the dream was so vivid and realistic that it made her sweat with tension. She felt both anxious and regretful. By the time the great journey ended, her legs gave way, and she almost collapsed.
But the story didn’t end there; it continued a little further. Thanks to this, Ivonne learned that Herix had been secretly using contraception out of concern for her well-being. And the final piece of the dream brought her to tears.
It was during the time Herix had returned drunk from drinking and poison. In that moment, a precious and noble light, which embodied the essence of all creation, began to stir within Ivonne’s womb.
This could only mean one thing.
“The reason the imperial physicians didn’t catch that I’m pregnant… could it be because my body isn’t fully human?”
Ivonne’s true nature was god. How could a human comprehend the creation of nature by a god? Conception and childbirth were so natural that it was beyond the capabilities of humans to detect.
Ivonne unconsciously cradled her lower abdomen. Her body, so thin and flat, made her wonder if there was something there, though it was most likely just her imagination.
‘So… this is it.’
Now that she understood everything through the dream and had realized the pregnancy she had been missing, she knew she wouldn’t feel sleepy again.
“Huff.”
Ivonne let out a sigh of relief. Finally, she could return to her normal life. She could now tell Herix the exact reason for her condition, which had been a concern for him.
As she always did, Ivonne woke up without warning.
“Ah…”
It was already dark outside. But as soon as she made a sound, Herix, ever careful yet not surprised, immediately came over. His eyes were bright, as if he hadn’t slept a wink.
Ivonne, feeling more refreshed than in recent days, realized that Herix had become emaciated just like her.
“Why are you so thin… No, let’s talk about this first.”
Her voice, hoarse from not speaking much, was almost embarrassing, but she wanted to say this with the clarity she felt now.
Ivonne, still weak, reached out with trembling hands to gently cup Herix’s thin cheek and smiled.
“I’m… pregnant.”
