Chapter 32.1
Seonghyun attended an academy class after a long time.
For the past week, he had been skipping classes continuously to prepare for the tournament, so it was his first in a week.
However, he couldn’t focus on the class.
Although he had been cleanly treated and parted ways yesterday, Sung-wook’s face today was almost pitiful.
Sung-wook soon noticed Seonghyun’s gaze, but he deliberately looked away.
As if telling Seonghyun to avoid him.
‘Did he happen to run into Hwang Eui-hyun on his way home?’
Seonghyun judged that it would only be harmful to Sung-wook if he continued to meddle any further.
Sung-wook shared the same sentiment.
Thus, they spent their time during classes and even breaks like strangers, exchanging awkward greetings as if they were mere acquaintances.
“Seonghyun, can you wait a bit after the class? The homeroom teacher wants to see you.”
“Oh, really? Why?”
“I don’t know? Just heard that he wants to see you for a moment after class.”
“Well, I guess I can’t help it then.”
Inhwan asked with a disappointed expression,
“So what about today’s session? Should we go after you finish talking with the homeroom teacher? Or maybe tomorrow?”
“Just in case, I’ll give you a call after the conversation is over. Don’t wait for me.”
“Alright.”
Although he wasn’t sure why the homeroom teacher wanted to see him, he had a vague idea of the intention behind it.
Seonghyun finished the class and headed straight to the homeroom teacher’s office.
Inside the office, he saw other teachers preparing to leave for the day, and the teachers from his class, who were opponents in the competition, gave him resentful glances before leaving.
“Oh, you’re here!”
The homeroom teacher greeted Seonghyun and immediately offered him a seat beside him.
“I asked you to come for a moment.”
“Oh, right. About that…”
The homeroom teacher, with the awkward demeanor and expressions typical of someone making a slightly burdensome request, began to speak.
“…”
Sung-wook conversed with Eui-hyun again.
In all their conversations, there was always a topic that was completely unnecessary for their dialogue.
It was one-sided communication.
“Would graduating like this even have any meaning?”
In that case, it would have been more helpful not to enroll in the academy at all.
Choosing a slightly unconventional path because living an ordinary life seemed difficult, he never expected it to lead to becoming this.
“I’ll… drop out.”
There was no room for choice anymore.
Even if I had endured the pain I’ve been through so far, he realized that from now on, he would have to endure longer and more painful hardships.
He didn’t know that the absence of choices could be so miserable.
The feeling of helplessness, of being unable to do anything, kept overwhelming him, and it felt like it was not just his mind but also his body being consumed by it.
“I’m… exhausted.”
Perhaps he didn’t realize that being tired at the moment might be a blessing in disguise.
If he had continued to spend more time at the academy, deliberately ignoring his own exhaustion, the situation would have only worsened with no sign of improvement.
The things beyond this were something he couldn’t handle on my own.
With just his meager ability to grasp abilities, he couldn’t do anything about Eui-hyun, who was specialized in close combat.
He could only hope for a little more sympathy, a little more mercy.
Sung-wook, sitting alone in the empty classroom of the academy, looked out at the sky gradually darkening outside the window and decided to leave the classroom before it got even darker.
He felt that staring at the increasingly darkening sky in his current state would only make him feel more miserable, and he also needed to inform the homeroom teacher about his decision to drop out.
“He hasn’t… left yet, has he?”
Ironically, now the only hope Sung-wook had was the homeroom teacher.
Although the homeroom teacher had been avoiding many things until now, this time, he wouldn’t be able to avoid this.
Sung-wook headed straight to the homeroom teacher’s office, and fortunately, the homeroom teacher was finally getting ready to leave for the day.
“Um… Sir.”
Sung-wook cautiously knocked and entered the teacher’s office.
“Hmm? Sung-wook? What’s the matter?”
The homeroom teacher looked at Sung-wook with a slightly furrowed brow.
‘Ugh, this feeling…’
The homeroom teacher didn’t seem particularly pleased with Sung-wook’s presence.
If he had been complaining about some harassment in the past, it was undoubtedly going to be a similar matter this time as well.
“I have something to tell you.”
“…I don’t have much time, so spit it out.”
The homeroom teacher briefly clicked his tongue and sat back down. Sung-wook, unable to find a seat, stood awkwardly and began to broach the matter.
“I… want to drop out.”
“What? Drop out?”
The slightly furrowed brow from just moments ago twisted further, and the homeroom teacher gestured to the chair beside them, urging Sung-wook to sit.
“I think you’re seriously mistaken about something…”
“Yes?”
“Dropouts are simply not possible at the academy. Wasn’t that made clear when you enrolled?”
“Hm, huh? Dropouts are not possible…? I remember that it was mentioned that dropout processing is…”
Sung-wook stared at the homeroom teacher with a dumbfounded expression, and the homeroom teacher sighed as if finding him pathetic and continued.
“Listen, student Kang Sung-wook. The academy is not a place to be taken lightly. On a small scale, it’s for the sake of this country. On a larger scale, it’s a place supported by those who will exert their efforts for humanity.”
“Well, but…”
Sung-wook tried to say something, but the homeroom teacher cut him off as if it wasn’t worth listening to.
