- Chapter 9 - Epilogue - Finally, We
The newly built temple had an open structure. Everyone could pray and receive help. Vellop, who became the Emperor, was a person with a finite temperament, unlike Keberos.
Of course, there were still bad customs that needed to be changed, but things were slowly progressing. As life became more comfortable, the number of people seeking me gradually decreased.
The Blake mansion was rebuilt in a quiet place. Not only because my body had deteriorated from all the hardships, but also because I didn’t want to be swayed by politics anymore, so I moved away from the capital.
The problem was that all the food in this village was delicious. The new chef’s cooking skills were so excellent that I couldn’t help but clean my plate entirely.
“Is it okay if you don’t eat more?”
He asked, gently pushing a dessert plate toward me.
“Hmm, I feel like my stomach might burst if I eat anymore!”
The dessert placed before my eyes made my mouth water. Since I was full, I barely managed to turn away and pushed the plate back to him.
“I can’t eat anymore. What if I really turn into a pig?”
“It’s good to see you eating well these days.”
In the end, unable to resist the temptation before my eyes, I popped the dessert he had offered into my mouth. He wiped my lips with his finger and smiled.
“Why am I eating so much… And I don’t know how much I’ve been sleeping, too.”
No sooner had I finished speaking than drowsiness washed over me. I blinked my eyes and yawned. Falling asleep right after eating—my body seemed too faithful to its instincts.
“This won’t do! Let’s go for a walk!”
Fearing I might fall asleep with a full stomach, I abruptly stood up from the chair.
I walked through the garden holding Severus’s hand. Today especially, I wanted to eat so many foods that even though my stomach hadn’t gone down, I ate my fill and my stomach was full.
“I’ve been strange lately. I keep getting sleepy, and no matter how much I eat, I keep wanting to eat more.”
My body felt unfamiliar, not like usual. I worried whether I was sick somewhere or if the side effects of using my ability had finally caught up with me.
“Anything else besides that?”
“Hmm, I’m not sure. My body feels heavy too… Come to think of it…”
There was one more strange thing. Although it was always unstable, I hadn’t had my monthly period recently. I realized something and stopped walking with my eyes wide open.
“Rilke? Is something wrong?”
“…Severus.”
I thought it wouldn’t happen since there had been no news afterward. Despite being intimate with him constantly, it was of no use. Following the saying that being impatient would prevent success, I had forgotten about it for half a year.
I wrapped my hands around my stomach and stared blankly.
“Is your stomach hurting? Are you hungry? Perhaps I should have asked for more dessert…”
“That’s not it.”
“Your stomach isn’t showing. Your stomach isn’t showing. Mine sticks out just the same, so don’t worry about it.”
Severus said while pushing out his non-existent belly. I appreciated it, but that wasn’t the reason. Suddenly, emotions welled up inside me. My lips trembled and feelings surged.
“Hic.”
My eyes turned red, and tears welled up, threatening to roll down my cheeks. Surprised by my sudden tears, he seemed flustered and hugged me, patting my back.
“What’s wrong all of a sudden? If I did something wrong or hurt your feelings, please tell me. I was clumsy and didn’t know, so I’ll do better next time.”
Such a caring man. I gently pushed his chest away, took his hand, and placed it on my stomach. I smiled brightly and told him.
“I think I’m pregnant.”
He placed his hand on my stomach and stared blankly at his own hand. Soon, his body began to tremble slightly.
“Rilke, my wife, my love. There are no words to express how I feel. I can only say thank you… I love you.”
Tears that had been precariously hanging in his red eyes flowed down. Embracing each other, we continuously confessed our love.
My love, my own, my lifelong companion.
My wife, my husband, whom I will love until the end of my life.
I Ended Up Saving the Duke Who Was Meant to Die End

I feel torn about this ending. On one hand, I’m satisfied with how things wrapped up. On the other hand, it felt quite rushed toward the end, and 1-2 more chapters would have certainly done the whole thing good. For starters, I’m missing that delicious schadenfreude – I would have loved to read more about the princess and the rest of the royal family suffering, and of course, Michaelo, too. But then again, that would have also created the opportunity to read more about Michaelo, and to be completely honest: nobody needs that. ಠ_ಠ
I believe that of all the villains I’ve read about so far, he’s definitely in the top 3 worst. I hope you found Severus and Rilke’s journey just as exciting as I did. I look forward to reuniting with you all in another thrilling tale soon!
P.S. They say every villain needs a tragic backstory, but Michaelo’s only tragedy is that he survived long enough to be in this book!
