He had clearly intended to leave her behind.

Mikhail had a duty to protect Dahlia. He had an obligation to ensure her safety.

But when he saw Dahlia looking significantly better in the carriage with Boestin, he began to reconsider.

“Boestin, please take care of Dahlia.”

“Why? Dahlia is not feeling well, why don’t you go with her?”

“I’m worried about leaving someone behind.”

“Oh! Goodness! Now that you mention it, the Duchess isn’t here. Hurry and take care of her.”

Boestin gestured urgently for him to go.

“Don’t go, Brother. I’m not feeling well.”

Dahlia clung to him.

“I’m your only family. You need to stay with me. It’s the right thing to do.”

Her grip on his sleeve tightened. She was right.

But if he went to the Duke’s estate in the carriage now, he would regret it.

He needed to return to the ballroom immediately and get her out. Mikhail shook off Dahlia’s hand.

“Stay with Boestin and go to the estate.”

“Brother! You’re not going to that woman, are you?”

“Dahlia. How long will you keep acting like an oblivious child? I can’t tolerate it any longer.”

“I understand, I know. But…!”

Dahlia tried to hold back her words. If Boestin hadn’t been there, she might have cursed at Emilia in frustration for not being able to kill her on the spot.

Mikhail closed the carriage door and headed back to the ballroom. Everyone was leaving, heading back to their estates. The carriages in front of the palace were disappearing one by one.

He saw Emilia standing and talking to Adrian, without receiving any treatment.

He couldn’t hear what they were saying, but judging by Byne’s expression, he could guess.

He walked towards them, who were standing in the empty ballroom. As soon as Adrian’s gaze shifted from Emilia to him, Mikhail felt a sharp pain in his heart, as if someone had struck him hard.

The hurt, the startled expression at his appearance.

He reached out to her and said, “Come here.”

He couldn’t provide a clear answer to her question about why he had returned. He simply felt that he needed to act, that he couldn’t go to the Duke’s estate as planned.

He pulled her close and held her in his arms.

He stared at her still untreated arm. It was half driven by impulse, half by his own will.

But seeing the relief in her eyes after seeing his return sent a wave of emotions through him.

Despite his attempts to ignore it, the gentle breeze of his own feelings was beginning to stir within him, slowly changing his perspective.

Even in the carriage heading to the Duke’s estate, she kept her gaze fixed on him.

“Why did you really come back?” Emilia asked, bewildered.

“Wasn’t it a good thing I came back?”

“You’re really acting on your own accord.”

“You shouldn’t be surprised by that.”

“Indeed. Aren’t you curious about what was discussed with the King?”

Mikhail didn’t need to hear it to guess what the conversation had been about.

“Not particularly.”

He looked at her injured arm. The dress was stained with crimson blood, making a mess of what was once pristine.

“Is there a problem with Miss? And the person who was beside you… No, let’s forget about that.”

Emilia felt his gaze on her arm and fell silent.

Mikhail pondered quietly. Every problem has its cause. Dahlia’s illness had a clear origin.

It was a rare congenital disorder that occasionally afflicted the Bayern family.

Madness.

Dahlia had shown symptoms of madness a year after the Bayern family had lost everything.

Despite her attempts to deny and accept it, Dahlia eventually had to face the reality of what had happened to her.

She was only six years old.

“It’s nothing serious. Dahlia is just suffering from a mental illness.”

“Is the cause of that illness me?”

“I’m curious why you think so.”

“There’s no particular reason. It just feels that way. I don’t know much about the two of you.”

“If you want, I can tell you.”

“It’s always like this with you.”

Her gaze once again calmed, shifting from curiosity to hesitation as she faced the truth.

“If you don’t want to know, it can remain buried.”

What does it mean to bury it?

Emilia had many questions she wanted to ask him. But she chose not to.

She turned her head away, pressing the handkerchief firmly against her wound.

“Do you know that Duke Loren left his injured daughter behind and left the scene first?”

“…It seems His Excellency is quite concerned with those around me.”

“Because they are related to you. You are probably the one who receives the most attention from me here.”

“I don’t understand.”

“I never expected you to.”

“Will Miss be okay?”

“With the medication, she shouldn’t have any more episodes like this for a while. Dahlia is a pitiful child.”

Had the Duke seen her? Had he witnessed the sight of her red eyes filled with murderous intent as she charged forward? Just imagining it sent shivers down Emilia’s spine.
