“There’s nothing I can’t do. I wanted you to have my child, so I switched it to something that could ensure a pregnancy. If you’re carrying a child, then it must be mine.”
Emilia stepped back, but his hand, which had wrapped around her waist, closed the distance between them.
“How could you go that far…?”
“Are you asking if I regret it?”
“No.”
Mikhail smirked. The look in his eyes said he had no regrets, so there was no point in asking.
“Why did you do this now, after hoping for my despair?”
“I don’t know. But I feel like I can’t live without you.”
“I didn’t get pregnant.”
“You still can’t lie.”
Mikhail’s finger lightly traced her lips.
He seemed to believe that she was carrying his child.
Emilia stepped back again. She didn’t want him to know.
So she said something reckless.
“It’s not your child.”
“Do you wish it wasn’t mine?”
Emilia bit her lip at the intense look in Mikhail’s eyes.
“Do you really think I was alone for over a month?”
She didn’t back down.
“You want to say it’s someone else’s child, don’t you?”
“…That’s right. I said it’s not yours.”
Emilia looked him straight in the eyes.
“Emilia, I wanted you to come back. Even while searching, I worried that I might find your corpse.”
“You didn’t hope for my corpse to be found, did you? If I died, you’d be freed. Why…”
“It’s not relieving. It makes it worse. Like a madman, all I can think of is you.”
Emilia chuckled at his words.
“Stop lying. You were in pain because I was gone?”
He should have been glad. Emilia pushed against his chest.
“Would you believe me if I said I was scared?”
“…You were afraid that I might be dead? You were worried and scared?”
Emilia shook her head. That couldn’t be true. Why would he worry about her?
“I never hoped you’d forgive me. And I don’t intend to feel guilty anymore.”
“Do what you want. I won’t be forgiven by you either.”
He buried his face in her shoulder.
“I can’t live without you. It feels like I’ve become a lost child.”
“…You still hold onto that hatred and resentment toward me, so nothing has changed.”
“That’s not it.”
Mikhail knew Boestin was right. He knew that the one left behind always suffers more.
He had learned that when he was young.
Emilia denying his child was all because of his past actions.
“If that were the case, I would have killed you.”
“…But you didn’t.”
“Yes, that’s the problem. Just like you can’t kill me, I can’t kill you.”
“Then let me go.”
It was better for them to let go of each other and stop causing each other pain.
Mikhail slowly shook his head.
“I can’t do that. You’re carrying my child.”
“…Don’t use the child as leverage. I told you it’s not your child.”
“It doesn’t matter. If it’s not mine, I’ll make it mine.”
“What, uhp…?”
Emilia’s lips were caught off-guard, unable to respond.
Hot breath rushed into her mouth. His firm hands wrapped around her waist, radiating warmth.
The red flesh inside her mouth overwhelmed her breath.
He drank from her as if he was a thirsty man, desperately pulling every drop of her saliva.
“Mm, mm.”
As she gasped for breath, Mikhail slowly, gently kissed her.
She gave up trying to break free from his tight embrace.
In truth, she was taken aback by how much he desired her. Mikhail looked at her with eyes full of longing, eyes she had seen before.
“I’m not asking you to forgive me.”
“…?”
“I don’t care if it’s another man’s child.”
“…So, you’ll still take the child, even if it’s not yours?”
Emilia narrowed her eyes.
“I don’t know when you started believing me. But if you feel responsible because you think I’m carrying a child, you don’t need to. I don’t want your pity.”
She didn’t need his guilt. If there was no love, having a child wouldn’t make her happy.
She had already experienced it. She had watched her mother and father’s relationship fall apart, and knew how it ended better than anyone.
No matter how much love, resentment, or hate existed between them, their relationship had ended in misery. There couldn’t be happiness between them.
Mikhail would always remember his parents, and she would always remember hers, who had died.
“We can’t be happy together.”
At that moment, there was sadness in his eyes.
“Responsibility… it’s not about that. Why do you think we can’t be happy?”
“You know as well as I do. What we feel for each other isn’t normal.”
Calling this love felt too painful. Even though he had crossed her mind countless times, it was clear that they couldn’t be together.
“That’s the problem. You think I don’t love you.”
“…You can’t love me.”
“Then show me.”
“…I can’t. The moment I left this mansion, I gave up everything.”
Emilia turned her head away. She couldn’t meet his eyes.
She was starting to weaken again. She was confused about why he was looking at her with such a hurt expression.
“I don’t think of it as another child, but if you want, think of it that way.”
He lightly kissed her neck as he spoke.
