Chapter 219

“And there’s one more confession I need to make.”
Dahlia hesitated for a moment before speaking.
“I gave Sister-in-law some birth control pills. But it looks like she’s pregnant. And she says it’s not your child.”
“So?”
“You don’t believe that, do you?”
Mikhail widened his eyes slightly and tilted his head toward Dahlia.
He thought Dahlia was bringing this up to confirm that what she said was true.
But Dahlia slowly shook her head.
“I think it might be your child.”
“Why do you think that?”
“She wouldn’t get pregnant with another man just within the span of a month.”
“Looks like you really know Emilia well.”
“I know her better than anyone, because I’ve hated and resented her more than anyone. I’ve been watching her closely.”
“That’s surprising. I never thought you’d say something like this to me.”
“I’ve experienced it. I know how hard it is to grow up without parents. The child’s innocent, so…”
Dahlia suddenly stood up from her seat.
“So, it’s settled now, right? I’m going to bed.”
Dahlia seemed embarrassed and tried to leave, but Mikhail didn’t stop her.
It was nice to see a slightly changed Dahlia. It was surprising that she had found something positive about Emilia, someone she had despised so much.
He too was feeling different emotions toward Emilia compared to when they first met, so Dahlia’s change didn’t seem so strange.
Thinking about it, Emilia was quite impressive. She had somehow managed to change the way both of them felt about her.
Mikhail leaned back on the sofa and closed his eyes. Somehow, the day seemed to be passing quickly.
Tomorrow, he would once again face Emilia, who would push him away, but what did it matter?
It was just the result he had to endure.
She might one day change her mind, just like he had.
All he wanted was for her to stay by his side without running away.
❖ ❖ ❖
Emilia lay in bed, her eyes wide open. The curtains were not drawn, and the room was dark.
She sat up and pulled the cord, and Dell appeared almost immediately.
“Madam, did you call for me?”
Was it not time to wake up yet? Emilia turned her head to look at the clock.
“It’s past noon. Why didn’t you wake me?”
“I thought you seemed tired, so I didn’t wake you. The Duke ordered that no one be allowed to enter until you called for us.”
“You didn’t wait outside all night, did you?”
“Of course not! Sir Byne was keeping watch, so I was able to rest.”
Dell looked like she had gotten a good rest, as her expression was relaxed.
“You need to eat. Aren’t you hungry?”
Dell drew the curtains as she spoke. Emilia wasn’t really in the mood to eat. Her mouth felt dry, and she doubted she could swallow anything.
“It’s fine.”
“No, it’s not! You need to eat well. And shouldn’t we contact Marquis Gepetto as well?”
“Right. Thanks for reminding me.”
Emilia suddenly remembered that she had forgotten about him.
“Could you bring me the newspaper?”
Dell quickly brought the newspaper from the table and handed it to her.
“I’ll go get water for your face.”
Emilia nodded and immediately opened the newspaper to read.
The Heinrich family had good news. Dahlia von Heinrich, who hadn’t even had her debutante yet, suddenly announced her engagement today.
Her fiance is Herman Byne, the head knight of the Duke’s household.
The love story between the two is drawing a lot of attention. The social world is expressing surprise, calling it a love that crosses class boundaries.
Due to the sudden announcement, many are talking about the relationship between the two.
Emilia continued to read the newspaper.
“Byne and Dahlia are engaged?”
It was an unexpected development. Just thinking about everything that must have happened while she was asleep gave her a headache.
It was likely the Duke who had planned all of this.
She quickly washed her face using the silver tray the maid had brought her.
“Dell, I need to get ready quickly.”
She needed to meet with the Duke to find out what was going on.
The fact that it was announced so hastily meant that they had wrapped up the conversation last night.
After King Adrian visited the Duke’s estate, he must have tipped off the newspaper, so he was likely the cause of it.
Emilia felt a tightness in her chest. Despite everything, such a sudden engagement announcement was not good.
Dahlia had once said that she wanted to meet someone she loved and get married.
Of course, whether that was sincere or not, at least she knew that an unwanted relationship would not end well.
She, of all people, had experienced it.
Emilia finished getting ready quickly and headed straight to the Duke’s office where Mikhail was.
“Your Grace, what’s going on here?”
“It’s exactly as you see.”
“Did the Miss agree to this?”
“Yes. She has to take responsibility for what she’s done.”
“…Responsibility?”
“It seems Dahlia said she would marry the king. She promised to withdraw that when she saw him, but apparently, he had already mentioned it to the royal family.”
“She made the first move before the scandal with the king broke out.”
Mikhail nodded lightly.
Even so, this method wasn’t ideal. But there was no other way.
“Byne will be fine.”
“It’s not because I have a problem with Sir Byne.”
“I know. I gave Dahlia the option. She chose this one.”
Though she didn’t know who else had been a candidate, it wasn’t a bad choice.
The atmosphere surrounding it was also good. Everyone would be interested in a love story, so the important part now would be how the two of them fell in love and became engaged.
