“I have something I need to protect.”

“I feel the same.”

“Then let me go. I don’t want to be trapped in the Duke’s estate. You told me to watch as you change, right?”

“Just tell me where you need to go.”

“Even without saying it, you’re going to assign someone to follow me, aren’t you?”

“If you don’t want me to, I won’t.”

Him suddenly complying felt strange. Emilia didn’t let go of her suspicion.

“I need to meet someone.”

“Is it someone you can’t tell me about?”

“Yes.”

“If it’s the owner of the Spiegel newspaper, I’d like to meet them too.”

Emilia narrowed her eyes. Then, she felt a sharp pain in her abdomen and bent over, taking a deep breath.

“Where do you think you’re going in this state?”

He spoke with an irritated tone as he supported her. After seating her on the sofa, he immediately called for a doctor.

“Tell me where you need to go. I can just have them brought to the Duke’s estate.”

“….”

Could she trust him?

Emilia shook her head. It was better to send a letter.

“It’s because I’m concerned. You’ll be fine soon.”

Mikhail didn’t let her go. After the doctor arrived and checked her, he picked her up.

“I said I’m fine. I can walk.”

“…If you move, you’ll fall.”

“Let go.”

“You know I won’t.”

Emilia closed her mouth, as if giving up. As they reached the room, he gently placed her on the bed and gave strict instructions to Dell.

“Don’t let her do anything strenuous. Don’t even let her lift a finger.”

“Yes, I understand! Just leave it to me!”

Dell’s determination was clear.

“I’m not a patient. Shouldn’t Your Grace be the one resting, not me?”

“I won’t die from this.”

Mikhail looked down at his waist. Despite the blood from the wound, he was fine. It made him question whether he was even human.

If the bandages hadn’t been visible through his open shirt, he might have forgotten it had happened at all.

With that, Mikhail left the room, feeling as though his task was complete.

As soon as he left, a maid entered the room with a tray. The food on the table seemed endless.

“How am I supposed to eat all of this?”

“You need to eat at least a little. Otherwise, more food will keep coming.”

“Dell, I need to send a letter, not eat.”

“Oh! I’ll prepare it right away.”

Dell quickly brought paper and a pen. Emilia began to write a letter to the Marquis.

[The bird has returned to its nest. However, a large hawk is watching the area, so you must keep your neck hidden and stay silent to avoid being noticed.]

That should be enough for him to understand. After handing the letter to Dell, Emilia looked at the food in front of her.

“Madam, you need to eat something, even if it’s just a little. Otherwise, they’ll keep bringing more food.”

“Dell, isn’t this a bit of a torment?”

“Well, the Duke’s methods may be a bit clumsy, but it’s his way of showing interest, right? I think it’s nice.”

Dell smiled brightly. Emilia sighed and took a small bite of food.

At least, with so many different types of food, she could pick what suited her taste, which was nice.

“If the Marquis comes to visit, won’t the Duke notice?”

“If he’s worried, he won’t come. I’ve already sent a letter saying everything is fine, so there shouldn’t be a problem.”

Emilia said this, but inside, she was still worried. Was she putting him at risk?

The royal family was watching closely, and if Mikhail caught wind of it, the Marquis could find himself in trouble.

He was also affiliated with the Elta Club, so he was connected to the pro-royal faction.

And soon, her worries became reality.

❖ ❖ ❖

“Madam!”

Dell rushed in hurriedly. Emilia, who had been resting, turned her head at the frantic voice.

She had been reading the newspaper and predicting what might happen next.

Once the conflict between the royal family and the Duke began, many things would change. Families in the pro-royal faction would also be caught in a dilemma.

The power that Duke Heinrich held was significant. He was someone who wielded considerable influence in Bartsch.

“Dell, breathe first.”

“You need to come outside quickly!”

“Is someone visiting?”

Dell nodded vigorously. Emilia approached the window and looked outside.

There, in the parking area, was a familiar carriage. Squinting, she saw the seal of Marquis Geppetto’s family.

Emilia immediately left the room.

He shouldn’t have come here. The Duke would realize immediately. He would know who had been protecting her and who owned the Spiegel newspaper.

Emilia quickened her pace.

“Madam, be careful! Slow down!”

Dell hurriedly followed and shouted. Emilia, breathless, stopped in front of the drawing room.

When she opened the door and entered, she saw the Duke and Marquis Gepetto sitting across from each other.

Mikhail looked at Emilia as she rushed in.

“It seems like it’s urgent enough to leave you out of breath.”

“I… thought a royal guest had arrived.”

“Did you come running because you were worried about the Marquis?”

A strange glimmer flickered in his red eyes. The emotions swirling there seemed on the verge of overflowing.

She felt it was best not to answer.

So, Emilia kept her mouth shut. Seeing her act this way only made Mikhail’s gaze grow colder and sharper.

“Let’s leave it at that.”

“Your Grace.”
