His attitude, not even bothering to tell her to leave, made the Madam’s face turn bright red. While he had whispered sweet words to her the night before, now that his desires were satisfied, he was cold and distant.

“Your Majesty, don’t you remember? You promised to make me your mistress…”

“Your husband is right there, how could I do such a thing? I know I may not seem reliable, but I’m not someone who would disrespect moral boundaries.”

“Your Majesty! You can’t do this. You promised me!”

“Men often make promises they can’t keep just to satisfy their desires for a night. Besides, you don’t really want to be my mistress, do you?”

“You promised me!”

As the conversation dragged on, Lady Luther intervened in annoyance.

“Did His Majesty even sign anything? If not, forget whatever His Majesty promised you, no matter what he might have said.”

“But, Lady Luther, I trusted those words and came to the bedroom.”

“Foolish. To believe a man’s words. Didn’t your mother, sisters, or friends warn you about that? Well, even if they did, it seems you wouldn’t have listened.”

Lady Luther’s eyes narrowed dangerously. She gestured for the knights.

“Take her away.”

“Lady Luther!”

“If you had acted wisely and discreetly, it would have been different. But greed led you to this end. You’ll lose your life over it.”

The woman’s face turned pale. She shook her head, falling to her knees on the floor.

“I’ll forget it! I’ll forget it, please just spare me!”

“The opportunity’s already gone. You should have acted more carefully.”

Lady Luther clicked her tongue as she watched the woman being dragged away, screaming.

“To think you had held such lowly women endlessly. How filthy. I don’t even want to associate with them. Hurry up, get dressed and come with me.”

“I’ve already seen the newspaper. It’s unfortunate, but what can we do? No one would believe the marriage was intended with the royal family, so trying to stop it would be useless.”

“More nonsensical words. A bigger issue has already occurred, so hurry up.”

Adrian stood up. He put on his robe and stepped into the bathroom leisurely.

“We’re going to the funeral.”

“Has someone died?”

With so many dying recently, there was no real sense of urgency about death.

“It’s not a funeral for the woman Mother killed.”

“Leah has died.”

“…Ah.”

Now he understood why the sudden urgency.

“I’ll get ready and come out. Even if I rush, nothing will change. Besides, there was no need to abandon family.”

Adrian glanced indifferently at his mother before heading toward the bathroom. He had a feeling today would be a long day.

❖ ❖ ❖

Emilia watched the passing servants in a daze, with nothing to do.

“Didn’t even a correction get issued?”

“That’s right.”

Count Chevron was crying, desperately clutching the coffin.

The only ones attending the funeral were herself and Mikhail. When news spread that he had been abandoned by Lady Luther, every noble turned their back on him.

He thought he would be living well in Mikhail’s townhouse, but the child who couldn’t even show up in social circles had failed and given up.

“Lady Luther will come.”

Emilia looked at the grief-stricken Count and his wife.

The coffin was slowly lowered into the ground. With every shovelful of earth that was poured, the Countess’s sobs grew louder.

“How could you leave me, your mother, behind? What couldn’t you endure…! I’m so angry, I’m so wronged, I’ll die soon, too! What sin did this beautiful child commit?!”

What would Lady Luther do if she saw this?

She’d probably pretend to be sad and offer her condolences. Emilia could already picture the scene that would unfold.

As the earth nearly covered the coffin, a royal carriage stopped.

At their arrival, Count Chevron’s head jerked around.

Mikhail just stood there, silently observing. Emilia couldn’t look away, her anxiety growing as she stared intently.

“What if something happens?”

“Even then, it’s their problem.”

“How can anyone be sane after losing a daughter?”

“Shouldn’t you be rational, especially at a time like this?”

“Not everyone is like you.”

Emilia passed him and went to the Count.

“Please hold yourself together. Anything you say to them right now will only make things worse for you.”

“…Duchess, I have nothing left to lose.”

“Are you going to let Miss Leah’s death be in vain? You don’t want your family, your house, to follow the same path I’ve walked.”

Emilia gripped the Count’s shoulder tightly before releasing it and nodding toward Dell.

“Can you help the Countess inside?”

“Yes, don’t worry. I’ll bring her some warm tea.”

The Countess was nearly unconscious. Supported by Dell, she barely managed to move.

Just then, Lady Luther, Adrian, and the palace attendants disembarked from the carriage.

These people, who had seemed like they wouldn’t show up at the funeral, lined up behind the King and Lady Luther.

Seeing their arrival, Count Chevron’s face darkened significantly.

“I can’t understand how much more they plan to desecrate my daughter’s death.”

“Count.”

Emilia called his name. He slowly nodded as if he knew without her saying anything.

Soon, Lady Luther approached the grieving Count, wiping her tears with a handkerchief.
