Chapter 40
While thinking that, I noticed a picture frame lying face down on a table.
I slowly approached the table and carefully picked up the frame.
But before I could even see who was in the picture, someone roughly grabbed my wrist.
“What are you doing in here?”
I had left the door slightly ajar when I entered, so I hadn’t even noticed Kallion come in.
Frowning at the pressure crushing my wrist, I continued calmly.
“I was looking around because I was going to organize the empty rooms.”
“Organize…?”
My wrist hurt where he was gripping it, so I tried to pull free, but his solid hand didn’t budge.
Startled, I looked up at him and froze. His expression was so cold that a chill ran through my chest.
Unlike his expression, which was cold enough to cut, his eyes seethed with an inexplicable rage.
Then he yanked my wrist roughly and strode forward.
Even as he dragged me along, I struggled to break free.
“Wait, let go of me…!”
I resisted through the pain that felt as though my wrist might snap, but he was too furious to listen and dragged me roughly out of the room.
By then, the wrist he was gripping had turned bright red, and my breathing had grown ragged from the pain.
“Who told you that you could enter this room as you pleased?”
His amethyst eyes burned dangerously, as though he had lost all reason, unlike his usual self.
I couldn’t understand why he was so angry.
Was there some kind of secret hidden in this room?
“Weren’t you the one who entrusted the entire management of the estate to me?”
My calm answer seemed to fuel his anger even further, and his gaze turned more vicious.
He yanked my already aching wrist closer and glared down at me from right in front of my face as though he wanted to kill me.
We were so close that our rough breaths brushed against each other’s faces.
“Goddamn Heister.”
He leaned in close, his bloodshot eyes blazing with rage as he growled.
“Have you forgotten what I told you? I told you to do nothing and live like a doll.”
Then he spat out the rest through clenched teeth.
“This isn’t a room someone like you has any right to enter.”
Someone like me had no right to enter this room. Even after handing over the authority of the lady of the house, you’re still exactly the same as you were before.
I deliberately ignored the pain in my wrist and met his gaze coldly.
“Judging by your reaction, I suppose it isn’t an empty room.”
Then I continued, breathing heavily.
“If it was such a precious room, it would have been nice if you’d warned me beforehand.”
For a long moment, the only sound between us at that close distance was our ragged breathing.
As we glared into each other’s eyes, a strange tension flowed between us. It was raw excitement, as though we were both desperate to tear into the other.
Surprisingly, Kallion was the one who stepped back and broke that precarious tension.
He irritably swept back his hair and warned me with a menacing glare.
“Don’t come near this room again.”
After making the threat with a murderous look, he coldly turned away.
Only then did I clutch my wrist as the pain came rushing back and glare at his retreating back.
There had been nothing in the room that seemed suspicious enough to implicate him.
Suddenly, Layla came to mind. I knew her room was in the annex where the servants’ quarters were located, but.
She was always working late into the night with Kallion in his office.
It wouldn’t have been strange if Kallion had prepared a separate room for her beside his office.
A bedroom that looked as though someone had lived there until recently. Furniture and an atmosphere far too feminine for it to be his room.
Even his hypersensitive reaction, as though some shameful secret had been exposed.
Every clue pointed toward Layla.
“Ha.”
Before I knew it, a hollow laugh escaped my lips.
In the past, even setting foot on the third floor had been forbidden to me, so I hadn’t even known a room like this existed. Thinking about it now, my past self felt even more pathetic and foolish.
Staring at my wrist, which was certain to bruise, I forced myself to calm down.
‘Whatever he does in that room with whoever he wants has nothing to do with me anymore.’
Right. Because the me who used to be hurt by such things was dead.
Ignoring the pain throbbing through my wrist, I walked away coldly.
