Chapter 57
Was it because she had protected her commission fee from being cut in half? Her mood, which had nearly hit rock bottom just moments ago, began to improve rapidly.
This man. How was it that everything he said and did was to her liking?
With a pleased expression, Eden looked at Bezel’s face, which made her marvel every time she saw it.
With a face that handsome, his personality should at least be terrible. If his personality was going to be good too, his abilities should at least be lacking. He treated her curse, cooked delicious meals, helped with commissions… And on top of that, he provided all of this free of charge.
As she thought about the valuable benefits Bezel brought her, she recalled what the Holy Knight had said at the church the day she saved him.
“Please don’t be like that. Help us out a little. God is always watching over us. By doing a good deed, surely good things will come back to you.”
She had thought that it was b******t at the time, but looking back on it now, he had been right. This is why people should live kindly. She had saved someone and even taken him into her home, and had she not received a reward equal to that, no, even greater than that?
As though she had never been depressed at all, Eden broke into a wide smile and patted Bezel on the shoulder.
“Bezel, let’s stay together for a long, long time. Even after you regain your memories, you can’t pretend not to know me, okay?”
“Yes, of course. Eden, more than anyone….”
“What?”
“No, it’s nothing.”
Bezel smiled brightly at Eden’s words, as though he were the one who should feel honored instead.

April was a month Eden wanted to tear right off the calendar and crumple up.
Upon returning home, the first thing Eden did was rip off the March calendar hanging on the wall. The April calendar revealed beneath it had a red circle drawn on the 10th.
April 10th was the day her parents died. Every year, it was also the day she keenly felt that she still had not finished her revenge, and ended up blaming herself.
“The older you get, the faster time passes. It’s a real problem.”
The flowers had not even bloomed yet and March was already over. Strictly speaking, there was one day left, but since it was already night, it might as well be over.
All that remained now was to suffer through nightmares every day until the 10th.
At this time of year, Eden would dream of Marbas without fail. How wonderful it would be if she could at least take that bastard down in her dreams. But just as she had seven years ago, she could do nothing but helplessly watch her parents die every time.
In the dream, she was standing there on that day seven years ago. The knife she had brought from the kitchen had not even been properly swung before Marbas seized her wrist.
Marbas, after shoving her aside as though flinging her toward the wall, snatched up her parents one by one as they rushed toward Eden. And then….
“Damn it.”
Eden rummaged through the kitchen and pulled out a wine bottle she had bought some time ago. With surprising strength she yanked the cork out with her bare hands and gulped the wine down without giving Bezel a chance to stop her.
“Eden…”
“Don’t look at me like that. I won’t get drunk and make a scene like last time.”
However, contrary to Eden’s concern, Bezel had not the slightest intention of stopping her from the beginning. Deep down, it was because he was eagerly anticipating her getting drunk and pressing her lips against his once more while fully awake.
Though her answer was extremely disappointing, Bezel skillfully managed his expression. He patted his chest as if relieved and tidied up the wine bottle Eden had emptied in one go.
“You must be the only person in the world who downs a whole bottle of wine in one shot.”
“You’ll be seeing this often for a while, so you’d better get used to it.”
Having knocked back the wine, Eden staggered into her room. There was not even a cursory goodnight telling him she would sleep first and that he should rest. She was too exhausted to even take care of herself.
Even after Eden disappeared from sight, Bezel did not return to his room and stayed in the living room. Sitting on the sofa with his legs crossed, he focused on the sounds coming from inside her room.
Unlike usual, Eden did not fall asleep easily and tossed and turned for a long while.
The sound of the blanket rustling as if she was turning over, the sound of dry heaving as if the hastily drunk alcohol disagreed with her, the occasional curses that could be heard, as though she were tearing into Marbas through clenched teeth. The unceasing noises made Bezel grow increasingly restless.
To have delicious prey right before his eyes and yet be forced to wait endlessly was torture in itself. All the more so because he was suppressing his hunger.
Eden had not been the only one running around all day. Not quite as much as her, but Bezel too had worked hard, transporting humans to various shelters. He had pretended to be kind, smiling brightly with his eyes, performing good deeds that did not suit him at all.
In the midst of this dreadful day, the only moment he had been able to truly breathe was when he had been alone with Johan.
