The complete lack of movement sent an ominous thought through her mind.

‘Are they… dead?’

The person’s face was hidden by a robe, making it even more unsettling. Moving a little closer, she heard a faint breath. Realizing they were alive, Edith sighed in relief.

She wanted to ignore it, but if that person were to die, it would weigh heavily on her conscience. So she changed her mind and decided to help.

‘If the situation turns bad, I can just call the knight commander for help… sigh.’

“Excuse me… are you alright?”

“…Hungry.”

“Huh? What did you say?”

“I’m… I’m hungry…”

While flustered, Edith was also taken aback by the sheer absurdity of what she heard, which inadvertently broke her tension.

Letting out a sigh of relief, she took out a wrapped food item from a bag she was holding—it was something she’d bought earlier in the market because it looked similar to a hamburger.

Sniffing the food, the man snatched the bread from Edith’s hand and began devouring it ravenously, exclaiming in amazement at how such food existed.

Once he had finished eating, seeming somewhat revived, he composed himself and offered his thanks.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve met a human as kind as you. I left my comfortable home for a long journey and found myself exhausted.”

He expressed gratitude that felt excessive for just some food.

“You are my benefactor. I consider it an honor. Repaying a favor is a rare thing for me. So, what is your name?”

‘Is this… his character concept?’ she wondered.

Though his voice sounded young, his manner of speech was peculiar, and he spoke with an arrogant posture.

“It’s alright, it was nothing really… Well then.”

Feeling she’d done her part, Edith wanted to slip away. But as she turned to leave, the man’s hand shot out and grabbed hers.

Startled, Edith looked at him and met a profound, serene gaze from within the robe.

‘Ugh, what is that? Are his pupils slitted?’

As this thought crossed her mind, the man, who seemed to see right through her, began tightening his grip.

“Ngh… that hurts.”

“My apologies. An instinct of mine slipped out.”

Seeing her in pain, he smiled meaningfully and finally released her hand.

‘I helped the wrong person! He’s completely weird!’

With a face full of fear, Edith hurriedly left the alley, hiding her reddened wrist in case he grabbed her again.

“Miss Moulton! I couldn’t find you and was looking. Where did you go?”

Serenity approached with a slightly pouting expression and handed Edith what she called the market’s specialty: ice cream.

‘This is…!’

It was slightly melted, but it was unmistakably that ice cream—stuffed into a thin, bread-like cone shaped like a stick. The kind commonly found at tourist spots or amusement parks.

The developer of this game, overflowing with a distinctly B-grade flavor, seemed to have intentionally included many elements reminiscent of Korean food.

The nostalgic food made her quickly forget about the strange man she’d just met.

Before her, Serenity shyly clutched her own ice cream, hesitating as if she had something to say.

“Young Lady, did you have something to tell me?”

“Oh my, Miss Moulton, can you perhaps read minds?!”

“Huh? Of course not.”

“Ah… well, I wanted to thank you for meeting me today.”

She smiled a genuinely pure, guileless smile, seeming truly grateful to Edith.

“You may already know, but I used to live as a commoner. Sometimes I want to come here for the memories, but I can’t come alone…”

“Ah… I see.”

“I wish the other young ladies would try these delicious foods too, but when I suggest it, they won’t come with me.”

Of course they wouldn’t. Nobles likely considered commoners’ food dirty. But they probably held their tongues in front of the Saintess, who, despite being a count’s daughter now, was originally a commoner.

“Ah! But today, having you, Miss Moulton, eat with me and enjoy it… I was so happy! So, actually…”

Listening to Serenity talk, Edith thought she really was the quintessential heroine. Considering the others’ reactions and what Carlton had said earlier, it should have been obvious. She was naïve, pure, and had a perfectly charming airheadedness.

And now, this Saintess was rapid-firing words at her, just like at the tea party. Edith vaguely sensed that a sentence destined to cause her unease was about to be uttered.

“May I call you Edith? I’d like us to be closer friends!”

‘I’ve been dragged in!’

And so, the first step to avoiding transmigration clichés—not getting involved with the heroine—ended in miserable failure.

‘Could I refuse her here? Of course, Serenity wouldn’t back down easily. And…’

While she had stepped on the landmine of a ‘flag’ today, it was also true that spending time with Serenity had evoked memories from before her transmigration and had been genuinely enjoyable.

Moreover, hearing Serenity’s wish to be closer friends reminded her of the heroine’s lonely game life, suffering at the hands of the male leads without a single friend, which stirred a sense of pity within her.

“Sigh… You may address me as you like, Miss Langor.”

“Thank you so much, Edith!”

‘Maybe it’s okay to just be involved with Serenity?’

Seeing her happy expression, Edith thought, Well, what’s done is done. It’ll work out somehow.

‘I just have to avoid those dangerous romanceable targets, right?’

Rationalizing it this way, Edith failed to notice that she was already developing genuine feelings for the characters in the game.

“Welcome back, Young Lady.”

Recently, with the maids becoming more compliant thanks to borrowing the Saintess’s influence, life at the estate had even started to feel somewhat comfortable.

‘Though Marie seems pretty unhappy about it.’

She thought, inwardly smiling at Marie’s clear displeasure while preparing the bathwater.

Lying in bed, Edith began to feel a flicker of confidence. If she could just avoid creating more misfortune, she might be able to survive this year without incident.

Even though avoiding the heroine was a failure, her heart felt lighter. The cool breeze from the slightly open window carried the scent of flowers, lifting her mood.

‘Seems I’m adapting pretty well~’

As she drowsily rolled around on the bed, a man watched her from outside the window. He seemed unaffected by gravity, sitting cross-legged in mid-air with his chin resting on his hand.

When Edith rolled over toward the window, her eyes met the man’s outside. She screamed.
