Carrying a basin of wash water and breakfast on a tray, Marie stood before Edith’s door. She doubted her ears at the faint sounds coming from inside.
The young lady, who had grown very lazy lately, as if ignoring her, usually only got up well past lunchtime. Being awake this early was odd.
Knocking once, Marie entered without waiting for a reply. Her eyes widened at the scene inside.
“…Lord Kai, please stop playing with my hair.”
Sitting beside Edith, who held a book and looked somewhat annoyed as she glanced at Kai, was Kaidros.
He lounged lazily in a chair, holding her long hair in his hand and bringing it to his lips. Seeing this, Marie felt her face stiffen.
‘That vixen! She usually sleeps in so late, but today she wakes up early and clings to my prince?!’
Clearly trying to get his attention, Marie glared at Edith with eyes full of jealousy. In truth, Edith, unable to sleep properly since Kaidros suddenly showed up at dawn, had given up and was reading a book beside him. She was openly showing her annoyance at him fiddling with her hair.
‘Ahh, I want to tear that vixen away from the prince right now…!’
While thinking this, brimming with anger, Marie was noticed by Kaidros, who gave her a deliberate, knowing smile. As if she’d never been angry at all, her heart instantly melted.
Tickled by the feeling of a secret affair, Marie didn’t notice the greedy desire to possess him slowly accumulating deep within her heart.
That night, after everyone had fallen asleep, perhaps the wink the prince had given her that morning had pulled a trigger in her heart.
Firmly deluded by her fantasies, Marie, wanting to confirm his feelings, stood before Kaidros’s door. She wore her sheerest slip, a robe draped over it to conceal her body.
‘If he lifts me with that slender yet muscular body, if his large hands touch me…’
For a moment, as if possessed, a reddish glint seemed to flicker across Marie’s pupils. Lost in the rapturous fantasies of what would unfold if she entered this room, she carefully opened his door.
The time when the moon was hidden by clouds, she illuminated the pitch-dark room with the candle she held and approached the bed, but the one she expected was nowhere to be found—the bed was empty.
“He’s not here? Where on earth did he go?!”
Having come all this way for nothing, a wave of frustration and irritation suddenly washed over Marie. Wondering where he could be, she left the room, only to have the misfortune of running into a servant passing through the hallway.
“What are you doing here, Marie?”
Though the servants used to be friendly, since that incident, Marie’s image had hit rock bottom. The servant looked at her suspiciously, asking with a slanted gaze.
“Since when do I have to report to you! How annoying, really.”
Unlike usual, Marie, feeling extremely sensitive, glared sharply at the servant and retorted in a sharp voice before stomping off in the opposite direction with a huff.
After that day, the prince was no longer seen on his morning walks and was hard to run into even within the estate. Frustrated, and thinking she might vent these feelings to the young lady who received letters from the palace, Marie went to deliver a letter. For the first time in days, she finally saw the prince.
Why is it that I never see him anywhere else, only in this room? A strange suspicion began to bloom in Marie’s mind.
‘Could it be… even if they are distant relatives, they share blood… Could that vixen have actually seduced the prince…?’
Consumed by suspicion and jealousy of Edith, Marie forgot to even greet the prince and hurriedly left the room.
After that, Marie’s thoughts began to spiral. As Kaidros remained unseen for nearly another two weeks, her heart was gradually blackened by greed and suspicion.
Then, on the cusp of early summer as the days grew hotter, while returning from an errand at the servants’ quarters, Marie glimpsed what looked like red hair in the garden.
Running toward it, she saw the prince and thought, Finally! She was about to approach to convey her waiting, longing heart—if only that young lady weren’t clinging to him like gum and if they weren’t heading into the woods together.
Feeling an anxious urge to follow, Marie’s steps carefully trailed after the two into the forest.
‘How… how could she seduce a blood relative…! Disgusting!’
Witnessing the act directly, Marie’s body froze in shock. To her eyes, it looked as if Edith had been the one to seduce her precious, pure prince.
Trembling with horror, her mind, filled with anger at having her person stolen, ceased to function properly. The ruby brooch pinned near her chest seemed to shine more dangerously, its color deeper than before.
‘Quickly, I must go and tell someone about this!’
Marie’s mind raced with the thought that she must urgently inform the estate’s people and the Viscount. For a moment, the thought ‘You must save your prince from that lewd beast’ whispered in her ear, taking over her mind.
She forced her stiff body to move and quickly fled the forest as if escaping.
