Yet, it felt utterly absurd to Edith that right next to this woman who received such unconditional affection, she herself existed, hated for no reason at all.

Of course, Serenity had also lived an ordinary life before receiving her Saintess revelation. But Edith, who had been born under a mountain of misfortune and endured psychological abuse from her father and the mansion’s servants from the very start, couldn’t help but find it unfair. The thought left a bitter taste in her mouth.

Lost in her thoughts, Edith didn’t see it. The status window, translucent and often ignored lately, floated at the edge of her vision. Inside it, her Melancholy Level crept up ever so slightly.

“Ah, I’ve been talking only about myself! Let me show you around the rest of the temple now.”

As if worried Edith might feel uncomfortable, Serenity hastily ended the conversation and opened the inner door of the Grand Chapel, offering a tour. The moment she did, the people who had been praying to the goddess recognized the Saintess and surged forward in a crowd.

“Saintess!”

“Please grant us your blessing!”

“O merciful one…!”

Suddenly swarmed by the crowd, Serenity asked Edith to wait for her nearby and then entered the inner sanctum of the Grand Chapel with her knights to offer prayers for those seeking blessings.

Serenity looked upon them with fondness, but in Edith’s own eyes, they appeared merely as selfish people demanding a blessing without any cost.

Pushed out by the crowd, Edith thought the Grand Chapel was too chaotic, and having already seen the fountain, she wondered where to go next now that she was here. As she pondered, a passing priest recommended visiting the Purification Space, which housed a pond people considered holy water, so she decided to head there.

‘That’s just how superstition works.’

As she walked, Edith firmly concluded that they wouldn’t so carelessly reveal real holy water, so the pond was surely just a space for faith. Yet, a thread of anticipation that it might have even the slightest effect on her misfortune propelled her steps.

Crouching before the pond, its water clear and sparkling as if transparent, Edith pondered whether just dipping her hands in would be enough or if she should immerse her whole body. That’s when someone approached her side.

“Has the young lady also come to offer a prayer to the goddess?”

A voice that stirred memories of the palace garden. When she turned her head, the angelic man from the Blackford family was looking at her with a smile.

[???, ??? Blackford, Age 22]

‘Huh? The info is…?’

His information had updated. At some point, the game’s system had become invisible to Edith.

No, to be precise, it had disappeared from her sight because she’d stopped paying attention to it. And now, consciously recognizing she was within the game again, she could clearly see the status window and character information.

It was as if, the more she assimilated into this game world, the more she became Edith, the more her reality dulled.

‘I just thought it didn’t appear because he was an extra unrelated to Edith. But why can I only see this much?’

When question marks had appeared in a character window before, the only thing missing was Kaidros’s age. She’d let it pass, thinking it wasn’t vital information. But in the current situation, this game, whose criteria she couldn’t fathom, felt incredibly unkind.

“Hello, Your Grace. Last time, I showed you an unbecoming display. I’m sorry.”

“Hm? It’s quite alright. But you seem to know who I am.”

“There’s only one family with black hair and blue eyes.”

She looked at him with eyes that seemed to say ‘obviously.’ The angelic young duke of Blackford let out a ‘haha’ and laughed. Unlike his drastic attitude last time, it seemed he found her current act of composure amusing.

“By the way, what brings Your Grace to the temple?”

“I’ve come to confess to the goddess. …To appease many souls.”

He spoke, stroking his chin with a hand clad in a black leather glove, despite the weather.

Edith didn’t understand the latter part, but hearing that even an angelic duke like him had sins to confess made her think. Just like the Knight Commander beside the Crown Prince, the main characters in this world were surrounded by such ‘normal’ people.

“Your Grace truly is like an angel. In personality as well.”

“You are an interesting person, my lady. Do you think that just by looking at my exterior?”

He laughed pleasantly, but his words seemed laced with something accusatory. Feeling odd, Edith grew awkward, as if she’d made a blunder.

“No, it’s just… my senses tell me you are.”

Perhaps he liked that answer. The tension eased from the duke’s demeanor. “Is that so…” he said, showing that angelic smile once more. Then he pulled a pocket watch from his inner coat, glanced at it, and offered his farewell.

“I hope we have a chance to meet again, my lady.”
