“Haa, if only she had held on a little longer… why do humans give up so quickly?”
“That’s not the problem. My child just awakened as the Saintess, and strange men are already tormenting her! If this continues, I’ll lose this child too. Isn’t there any way?”
At the platinum-haired woman’s urging, the black-haired woman picked up a balance scale beside her. The scale began to tilt back and forth.
“Fortunately, using that child’s soul and the life taken by burning the mansion as a price, I can adjust the Law of Causality a bit. But I can’t turn back time much.”
“What if the same situation occurs again?”
“Since that child ended her own life, even if I turn back time, she cannot return to her own body.”
“Then that child’s existence would vanish from the start! Are you saying to send another oracle for a different Black Saintess now?”
The black-haired woman thought for a long while, then found a solution.
“In the end, we must bring a new soul and create another possibility. The problem is the Law of Causality might demand my time as the price.”
“I beg you. Those poor ones need a Saintess.”
“Then, while I sleep, take good care of my child.”
“Don’t worry.”
With those words, the scene of the two women conversing ended. Then, the status window began speaking to me.
[I am the herald of the goddess who is now asleep. I was wandering other worlds to find a suitable soul to fulfill the mission.]
“So, in the end, you dragged me here to replace the dead Edith?”
[Yes. Your soul was the most suitable, so you were invited this way.]
“What the hell is this! I never asked for any invitation!”
Remembering the scene of the two women and Edith’s suicide, I felt utterly broken mentally. But the status window relentlessly continued conveying their story.
I thought there was no one to resent for all the absurdity piled up until now. That it was only my fault for playing the game.
But enraged by the fact that everything had been manipulated according to their whims, I began hitting the status window with my fists.
[Whether you wish it or not, once invited, there is no way back. Because the price to the Law of Causality has been paid. If you complete Edith’s mission and properly guide the Saintess’s destiny, we will send you back to your original world.]
“Complete the mission? What about after the year passes? If you send me back, what happens to Edith?”
[If she safely endures this year when the Saintess turns twenty, the role of the Black Saintess ends.]
“The role ends…? What does that mean?”
[That is not for you to be involved in. You simply need to live out the remaining half year as Edith.]
“Why are you forcing me… How can you expect me to endure knowing everything…”
Even as I raged and tried to smash it, the status window remained completely unaffected. It only delivered its demands as if stating facts. My mind and body exhausted, feeling as if everything had burned to ash, I collapsed.
[Still, many variables have arisen because of you. As Edith’s presence, which the goddess had hidden to avoid notice, began to unravel, their attitudes changed.]
“What good is any of that… Just send me back…….”
Now having given up on everything, I muttered. But, as expected, the game didn’t listen. It simply expelled me from this long, deep abyss.
[Then, be careful not to die and endure until the end.]
* * *
[Panic State Lifted.]
When I opened my eyes, I had no sensation below my waist. Looking at my own body, the traces of the act plainly visible, Edith had no idea how much time had passed.
Typical of the Crown Prince, to have done this even while she was unconscious. Trying to move her legs, a heavy feeling pressed down on her feet. Thick iron shackles were clamped around her ankles.
Finding the situation utterly absurd, Edith let out a self-mocking laugh. The sound grew louder until she began screaming.
But no one came for Edith. Only silence flowed in the room.
I—no, Edith—was a fate that had to bear not only the misfortune destined for the Saintess, for her to live happily and well, but also the burden of insane male leads.
How could a girl already so burdened endure the remaining year…? It was completely understandable that Edith, who couldn’t possibly endure it, had committed suicide.
But to save the Saintess suffering misfortune and pain, the goddesses had selfishly revived Edith, the clear victim.
In this utterly unacceptable situation, she felt a mix of betrayal and injustice. Her anger first went to the goddesses, then turned toward these insane characters in this game.
After a long, quiet contemplation, Edith raised her head. With all her might, she crushed the earring on her right earlobe with her fingers.
Soon, a crimson flame blazed high before her eyes and extinguished. In its place stood Kaidros.
“Finally… why on earth didn’t you return? I searched for you so long, unable to find a trace, unable to sense your presence…!”
Edith looked at Kaidros, his expression worried as he grabbed her shoulders, his emotions intense. She smiled brightly and made a request.
“Please help me get out of here, Kai.”
She showed him her ankles with a clanking sound. Looking at it, he seemed somehow angry. He flicked his fingers roughly.
The shackles vanished in an instant, consumed so easily by flame.
Then, seeing Edith silently extending her arms toward him as if asking to be held, he pressed a hand to his forehead and flicked his fingers once more. Clean, practical clothing appeared on her body.
Carefully picking up the now-freed girl, Kaidros broke the window without even touching it and flew outside.
“Kai, I have one more request. Ah, before that, put me down over there for a moment.”
Feeling the cool outside wind while being held, Edith asked to be set down somewhere on the outskirts of the capital.
“Burn down the Viscountcy’s people and mansion for me, please.”
Kaidros stroked Edith’s cheek as she made another request and spoke.
“I will burn the mansion and the people there as you wish. But in return, you must wait here. While you were gone… I truly…”
With a voice that seemed choked with emotion, he murmured to her, his face a mixture of complex feelings as he made his request.
“If I grant your wish, I wish you would grant mine. If you go west, you’ll find my nest. Won’t you come there with me?”
‘It sounds like a proposal somehow.’
At his desperate voice and demeanor, Edith smiled more brightly than ever and nodded.
Her response seemed to give him confidence. Saying he’d return soon, Kaidros left Edith behind and flew toward the mansion.
Watching him go, Edith focused, calling the status window in her mind.
‘If you don’t want to see me bite my tongue and die, making all this a complete waste again, you’d better grant my request.’
Her threat seemed to work, as the status window appeared in her vision.
‘Make it so no one can detect my traces or recognize my appearance, at least until I leave the Empire.’
[That much is possible.]
Soon, she watched her hair begin to change from the ends to a plain brown. Finding a pane of glass that could reflect her, she saw Edith’s appearance had changed to ordinary: brown hair, brown eyes, and a face somehow unmemorably common.
Satisfied, Edith cast a sharp glance at the smoke billowing from the burning Viscountcy mansion in the distance, then at the imperial palace in the opposite direction, before disappearing into the crowds of the capital.
