“Edith…”
After gazing for a long time, she seemed to have decided something. She took a deep breath and spoke.
“Kai, I have one more request. Ah, but before that, put me down over there for a moment.”
The cool wind at high altitude enveloped them.
Hearing her wish within that wind, Kaidros buried his face in her small shoulder and closed his eyes.
Edith didn’t push him away. She simply stayed still. And the request that came from her lips was so unlike her, it was hard to believe it was truly Edith’s wish.
“Burn down the Viscountcy’s people and mansion for me, please.”
From the signs of the act in the palace room and its condition, he could guess what the Crown Prince had done to her. He wanted to burn him to ashes immediately for breaking her spirit to this extent in such a short time.
Rage surged within him, strong enough to make him want to incinerate not just the mansion but the palace and the entire Empire. But he suppressed that impulse as much as possible.
Then, carefully setting her down in an alleyway of the capital, far from the palace, Edith hopped down from his embrace.
“I will burn the mansion and the people there as you wish. But in return, you must wait here. While you were gone… I truly…”
He reached out and stroked her soft cheek as she looked up at him from where she’d left his arms, his voice slow and mixed with a tangle of emotions as he conveyed his feelings.
“If I grant your wish, I wish you would grant mine.”
He couldn’t tell what her hazy gray eyes were thinking. He simply met their quiet gaze with his own.
“…If you go west, you’ll find my nest. Won’t you come there with me?”
Edith’s eyes widened slightly. Then, with the brightest smile he’d seen since meeting her, she nodded in agreement.
Somehow feeling both relieved and unsettled, he withdrew his hand and turned to fly toward the mansion to shake off this feeling.
“I’ll be back soon.”
Leaving her behind, Kaidros headed for the Viscountcy mansion on the outskirts of the capital. He gazed down at the mansion beneath his feet with utterly cold eyes.
There were undoubtedly many humans inside that mansion. But he didn’t care in the least. Rather, those humans who had tormented her seemed less than insects on the road to him.
No, he never liked humans to begin with; he found them revolting.
That fact was clear from how he had left for the west, untouched by human feet, long ago when the Empire was newly founded, disgusted by their self-slaughtering ways.
With emotionless eyes, he flicked his fingers. Immediately, a great fire engulfed the mansion, and the pungent smell of smoke billowed upwards.
The fire, attached only to the mansion without burning the surroundings, blazed fiercely as if to erase its very existence from that spot.
The mana-fueled flames quickly consumed the mansion. Truly, only empty ashes remained in its place.
He wanted to return to her immediately.
To take her hand, go to his nest in the west, and share the life with her he had somehow begun to dream of.
He would clear away the dangerous monsters in the western Monster Forest so she could live there, and arrange the nest as comfortably as possible for her.
Then, he planned to gather all the world’s treasures to propose to her. His heart raced at the thought as he flew back.
A smile crept onto his lips. Lost in this dream-like future vision, he sped up.
But when he returned, there was no trace, not even an aura, of Edith.
Only the thick aura of his old friend, the goddess, remained. Wondering why the goddess’s scent lingered here, Kaidros searched again for her trace.
But the feeling was as if she had never been there, completely erased. His panicked mind couldn’t process it properly.
‘The goddess should be asleep. Yet this faint aura… is it her herald?’
For some reason, Edith had nodded. It couldn’t have been her wish. His emotions, already resenting the goddess for interfering, knew he would have to search for her again. This time, for a very, very long time.
