A figure, face tightly covered by a mask that revealed only the eyes, silently approached the sleeping Edith.
The masked person examined the sleeping Edith closely, then looked around the room.
Her small travel bag—hardly worthy of being called luggage—contained only her wallet, some simple cooking tools, and a few pieces of clothing. For a moment, the figure stood there awkwardly, then slipped back out through the window.

Edith, who had no idea someone had broken into her room during the night, seemed to briefly question whether she’d slept with the window open before deciding she must have.
When she first started running, anxiety over when the male leads might pounce kept her from sleeping properly. But having reached the border region and with much time passed, her mind seemed to have settled.
As Edith, now ready, was about to leave, she remembered Perry’s advice from yesterday, adjusted her robe properly, and went downstairs. At a table sat Perry and Kazan, looking exactly as they had on the street yesterday, with their hoods pulled low.
Even though she thought she’d come down early, seeing them already there made her feel a bit sorry. Perry waved as if he’d been waiting and called out to her.
“Good morning, Miss Edie.”
Welcomed warmly, Edith returned the morning greeting. Kazan, sitting next to Perry, merely gave a slight nod of acknowledgement.
Since yesterday, Edith had found the way they addressed her—”Miss”—unfamiliar.
Of course, it was better than being called “My Lady,” but given her current status as someone doing odd jobs for travelers, she thought being called just “Miss Edie” would be nicer.
“Could you maybe… drop the ‘Miss’ part…?”
“Ah! Calling someone ‘Miss’ is just a habit of mine. If it’s uncomfortable, shall I just call you Edie?”
Her best-case scenario address came out right away. Edith nodded vigorously.
Kazan’s shoulder seemed to quiver slightly as he watched, but as he’d been quiet since they first met, Edith paid no mind and ordered breakfast.
Outside the trading village lay a dense jungle area, and to reach it, one had to pass through a mandatory checkpoint.
Although it was a border region, the Empire and the kingdom were allies, so she had naively assumed it would be fine. She was taken aback by the long line stretching from the checkpoint.
Most were merchants and carriages. Soldiers were checking people by holding papers next to their faces and meticulously inspecting the insides of carriages.
‘Don’t tell me… after all this time without incident…’
Her tension, which had slackened, began to pull taut again.
With a sudden sense that someone might pounce on her from behind at any moment, Edith grew pale. Perry looked at her with concern.
“Are you alright, Edie? You don’t look well.”
“No, it’s just from… standing too long, I think.”
She desperately hoped her fears were wrong, but as the line grew shorter, she could hear merchants ahead talking.
“Why are the checks so strict lately?”
“Don’t know. They’re looking for some woman from the imperial palace. Did a criminal escape or something?”
“If the imperial family is looking, must be some vicious criminal, right?”
Her worst fear was confirmed.
There was no way she could get caught here, not after coming this far.
Thanks to the game system, her appearance had been changed to an ordinary one. But if by any chance one of the male leads was nearby, he’d surely recognize her in an instant.
Soon, it was their turn. The knights at the checkpoint stopped them and requested they identify themselves.
Perry reached inside his robe and pulled out a single, seemingly valuable document, showing it to them. The knights who checked it politely asked them to remove their hoods to show their faces.
Perry and Kazan, with their foreign looks and being men, passed through easily. But when it was Edith’s turn, her hand hesitated as she went to remove her hood.
Finally, a knight stepped closer to check her face, holding a paper beside it.
At a glance, the paper had a rough sketch of Edith’s own face.
“A bit similar, isn’t it…?”
The knight tilted his head slightly, squinted his eyes, and seemed to alternate between looking at the drawing and Edith’s face.
The knight stared for a long time, delaying the checkpoint, so another knight came over and gave him a light slap on the back of the head.
“You idiot, the hair and eye color are different! And this person in the drawing clearly looks like a noble, but this one…”
As he said this, the knights who had glanced at her face coughed awkwardly and put the paper away.
Even though the game had changed her entire facial impression to be so common it wouldn’t stick in memory, the knight who stared for so long must have had good instincts.
“Ahem. Those two clearly look like kingdom citizens, but you seem very much like an imperial citizen. Can you show us something to prove your identity?”
