Caught by a monster before she could even properly eat the meat, she inwardly lamented her fate, feeling deeply wronged.

Crunch, rustle.

Emerging from the surrounding brush, the monster revealed itself. It resembled a black wolf, but its size, fitting for a monster, seemed at least three times larger.

Overwhelmed by the sight of her first monster, Edith froze. The monster, having chosen her as prey, lunged in an instant.

As it leaped, its black fur undulated like slime, approaching her death-facing eyes as if in slow motion.

And then, something flew in, embedding itself deep into that fur and shoving the monster sideways—all in less than a second.

Kyaaak!

As the monster that had fallen to the ground with a thud tried to rise again, Perry swiftly approached and swung something round.

Under the rapid, successive blows, the monster began to retreat, oozing thick, dark-red blood, until it finally fell with another thud.

Wiping the blood splattered on his face with the edge of his robe, Perry held up a disc-shaped blade, gave it one swing, and the blood clinging to it poured onto the ground with a wet shlick.

“Edie, are you okay? You look quite shocked.”

He threw aside the heavily blood-stained robe, approached Edith who had slumped to the ground in shock, and offered his hand.

Clink, clatter.

With the robe removed, multiple disc-shaped, round, flat blades of various sizes were visible attached around Perry’s waist and arms, clinking against each other.

The sharp, gleaming disc-shaped weapon in his hand was as large as his own back.

“You had a weapon… I couldn’t see it, so I thought you weren’t a fighter, Mr. Perry.”

“Ah, you mean the chakram? I usually keep them hidden under the robe, so you might not have known.”

Edith stared curiously at the unique weapon, the chakram, she was seeing for the first time.

Perry, placing a hand on his hip, laughed as if he now understood the reason for her worried expression before they entered the center.

“Even if Perry looks small, in the kingdom, he’s quite a famous Guardian of the Desert.”

“Wow, you can speak, Mr. Kazan?”

Hearing Kazan speak to her for the first time as he stood by with arms crossed, watching the situation, Edith blurted out her surprise mixed with her inner thoughts.

“I could always speak.”

“Haha… it was a joke. But what’s a ‘Guardian of the Desert’?”

“Think of it like your Empire’s knight order. They use the kingdom’s unique weapons. It’s less about brute strength and swordsmanship, and more valued on agility and skill with the chakram.”

Even though she’d explained it was a joke, Kazan seemed a bit put out, his brow slightly furrowed as he answered Edith’s question.

Seeing him, who had remained silent to all her questions until now, respond properly and show a reaction seemed somewhat cute.

‘Should I tease him a bit, pay him back for all the times he left me hanging?’

Feeling the urge to tease him, she unconsciously let out a soft, beaming smile. Seeing this, Kazan flinched, then smoothed his brow, returned to a blank expression, and avoided her gaze.

With no reaction now, the fun faded, and Edith pouted her lips.

Perry, who had been watching the situation, finally seemed to find his moment to interject and spoke cautiously.

“Anyway, we can’t camp next to a monster carcass. We need to move.”

Their spot had been ruined by the monster’s appearance in the middle of their meal.

Edith, who had lost her appetite for the food she couldn’t finish, looked at the carcass oozing dark red blood beside it and immediately shook off her regret.

Walking around for quite a while late into the night to get as far from the carcass as possible, they found a cave perfect for a new campsite.

After Perry went to scout it and reported it wasn’t too deep and seemed safe, they settled in.

Kazan lit a fire outside the cave entrance and volunteered for the first watch. Perry tried to talk him out of it but failed and reluctantly decided to rest inside the cave with Edith.

While Perry fell asleep quickly beside her, Edith couldn’t easily fall asleep due to the day’s many events.

Thinking about almost getting caught at the checkpoint and dragged back to the imperial palace, or being attacked by the monster, made her head throb with rising stress.

Giving up on clearing her mind, she got up and went to sit beside Kazan, who was on watch.

“Mr. Kazan, can’t you sleep?”

Edith tried to break the awkward atmosphere by speaking, but Kazan, just like at first, sealed his lips and ignored her, making her sigh.

Weary of this act, she began talking to herself about various things.
