Chapter 29
Karl fell into thought as he listened to the court physician. No one understood the dangers of one-sided manifestation better than he did. In the past, his Name had appeared first on Tilda.
His mind began to move quickly. How could he use this situation to his advantage? It might seem troublesome, but depending on how one looked at it, it could actually be an opportunity. Perhaps this time he could finally deal with that nephew who had long been a thorn in his side.
‘Using the Name as a pretext, I could accuse that bastard of attempting to assassinate the Crown Prince in order to seize the throne.’
A plausible charge came to him instantly. Justification could always be created if necessary. For a crime as serious as attempting to usurp the throne, even the ministers wouldn’t object. As long as the evidence was properly prepared.
The military power of the North had grown to a point where it could no longer be ignored. Having guarded the border against barbarians for many years, it had gradually grown into a force that now rivaled the central authority of the Berg Empire itself.
Karl recalled the box Leonhardt had brought him a few days ago. Inside it had been the head of the former barbarian tribal chief who had secretly been communicating with a traitor on their side under Karl’s quiet instructions. When Karl lifted his head in shock, he saw the vicious smile on Leonhardt’s face, and cold sweat ran down his back.
“Do you like the gift, Your Majesty? This man was the former tribal chief who had secretly been communicating with our traitor. A very greedy and brutal fellow. Now he will never again invade our lands and slaughter innocent citizens of the Empire.”
Leonhardt opened the lid of the box and placed it right in front of Karl’s nose as if to show it off. Inside was the grotesque head of a corpse, its tongue sticking out and its eyes rolled back.
For a moment Karl’s legs nearly gave way beneath him. Startled, he hurriedly stepped back from the table before realizing that blood was still slowly leaking from the bottom of the box.
It had essentially been a warning. It meant he should abandon any thoughts of scheming by using some pathetic old tribal chief. The result of such schemes was sitting right before his eyes.
‘That bastard must know that eight years ago I sent him to die on a battlefield.’
Karl had hoped the brutal barbarians would take care of his frail bookworm nephew instead. Yet instead of dying, he had returned as a terrifying giant, like a massive wild bear.
Moreover, within the noble society of the capital there were still many who remained loyal to the former Grand Duke of Tessen, Benedict. Those forces had steadily been strengthening themselves behind the scenes. Considering that rumors of Benedict’s assassination had quietly spread, it wasn’t surprising.
A large tree that will one day block your view must be cut down while it is still a sapling. Otherwise you will one day wither and die beneath its shade.
Karl intended to secretly call his son later that night and give him a subtle hint. He planned to persuade him by saying, try approaching Lady Wittgen as well, then we can use that as an excuse to eliminate that cousin of yours. His simple-minded son would likely accept the idea without much thought.
“Pardon me…”
At that moment a small but firm voice cut through the excited murmurs of the room. It belonged to the younger of the two court physicians. When everyone turned to look at him, the young physician seemed to gain courage and spoke more loudly.
“Forgive me, but sleeping with each other is not absolutely necessary in order to determine a Name’s pair. Of course it is the most certain and effective method, however consistent physical contact alone can stabilize the condition to some degree.”
“Are you certain?”
Tilda and the Duke and Duchess of Wittgen brightened and turned toward the physician.
“Yes. If there is consistent contact through light physical affection, such as kissing, it is known that this can both aid treatment and increase the chance of the Name manifesting. Of course the effect won’t be as strong as intercourse, but in the case of His Highness the Crown Prince this method could be used.”
As soon as the young physician finished speaking, Rose, the Duke and Duchess, and even the imperial couple all scowled.
‘What kind of nonsense is that? In the end they still have to make contact. Is that fool of a physician seriously presenting something like that as a solution?’
